Brief DescriptionThe Department of African Languages at the University of the Witwatersrand is seeking to make an appointment at the level of Lecturer (to start on 1 September 2024)

Requirements:

  • Experience in teaching formal and/or computational linguistics;
  • Ability to teach isiZulu and/or Sesotho second language (L2) acquisition courses;
  • A PhD in any area of formal and/or computational linguistics;
  • Evidence of research ability, with 1-2 peer-reviewed publications;
  • Home language proficiency in at least one of the following and fluency in at least another two (isiZulu, isiXhosa, isiNdebele, Siswati, Sepedi, Sesotho, XiTsonga, and TshiVenda)

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will be required to:

  • Lecture at undergraduate and postgraduate level;
  • Supervise postgraduate student research in one or more indigenous languages of South Africa (preferably in isiZulu and/or Sesotho);
  • Conduct research and publish in the field of African linguistics;
  • Carry out administrative duties in the department/school and take part in the intellectual and public life of the university;
  • Participate in curriculum transformation activities
