The Faculty of Humanities offers a rich suite of programmes and pursues the best standards expected of disciplines in the liberal arts tradition.

The Faculty is shaped by several departments in the languages, core social sciences, applied social sciences and a School of the Arts (a School of Languages is under construction).

A vision is made possible by collaboration, dialogic engagement and active joint endeavours that enables us to also work beyond bounded disciplines.

This is underpinned by a view of the central role that the humanities, arts and social sciences plays in developing the knowledge economy and advancing the human resource development needs of the country, recognising the role that the humanities play in our cultural, social and political lives.

The Faculty recognises that we are both simultaneously local and global, and that it is a virtue to promote learning and critical inquiry that recognise the past, present and future in the rich diversity of our country which is connected to the continent and the rest of the world.

This is a vision underpinned by deliberate attempts to foster creativity, promote social justice and to advance scholarship that advances the transformation of local and global communities.

This is supported by a mission that views the Humanities to be fostered in a research-intensive context through collaboration, exchange, and funded scholarly/creative projects that result in lifelong learning among staff, students and broader society.

The University seeks to appoint a Dean who is a dynamic leader capable of visionary leadership, strategic thinking and the ability to effectively execute the strategic plans of the University and the Faculty.

The successful applicant must possess the requisite qualifications and experience for appointment as a full professor in the Faculty of Humanities.

The Dean is assisted by appropriate management and support structures.

RESPONSIBILITIES
- responsible for ensuring that the ethos, vision and mission of the Faculty are aligned with that of the University;
- responsible for ensuring that the Faculty meets its strategic goals and targets;
- able to provide strong academic leadership and possess the capacity to promote excellence in research, teaching and learning;
- able to present evidence of their ability to create an environment that is conducive to research, teaching and learning excellence and community engagement in the Faculty;
- expected to market the Faculty, undertake fundraising and promote regional, national and international partnerships with other academic institutions, potential employers of our students, research organisations, financial, commercial and business enterprises, government and the community; and
- part of the University's senior management team and will provide oversight in respect of the management of the operational activities of the Faculty of Humanities.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

  • An appropriate doctorate with specialisation in the broad field of Humanities (including the Arts and Social Sciences);
  • At least three years' experience in highlevel liaison with internal and external stakeholders and professional bodies in a tertiary education environment;
  • At least three years' experience in the supervision of postgraduate students (Master's and PhD students);
  • An established national and international research profile and networks; and
  • At least five years' proven leadership experience.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Recognised academic status in the broad field of Humanities at professorial level;
  • A proven research, publication and teaching track record and the ability to create an environment in which research, teaching and learning activities are supported and can flourish;
  • Ability to manage the Faculty and provide sound academic leadership;
  • Ability to provide strong leadership and the capacity to lead the Faculty on the journey that it has already embarked upon with regard to curriculum transformation; and
  • Excellent communication and appropriate language skills.

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • Three or more years of managerial experience at a tertiary institution; and
  • An NRF rating.
