RESPONSIBILITIES:

The incumbent will be responsible for:

  • Co-ordinating the optimum functioning of Theatre and the Central Sterilising Department;
  • Rendering outstanding client service;
  • Ensuring efficient section management through supervising and assisting staff in daily tasks;
  • Ensuring open communication within the section and between the section and the Hospital Manager (Matron);
  • Assisting surgeons with specialized and general veterinary procedures on small, large animals and wildlife;
  • Overseeing the General Medical Store (surgical implants and theatre consumables);
  • Managing expenditure control and submit inputs towards the capital equipment budget;
  • Ordering drugs, consumables, cleaning material, implants and general items utilised by the theatre;
  • Assisting with cost estimates for surgical procedures;
  • Taking responsibility for and overseeing maintenance of all veterinary and general equipment used in theatre;
  • Reporting all facilitiesrelated damages and shortcomings and check that maintenance is done satisfactorily;
  • Ensuring that theatre hygiene and biosecurity is of the highest standard;
  • Ensuring patient care (pre, intra
- and postoperative);

  • Assisting with continuous informal training of students and student nurses;
  • Rendering afterhours emergency services on a rotational basis;
  • Performing relief duties in other sections in the OVAH;
  • Performing shift duties

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Diploma in Veterinary Nursing (DipCurAnim or Dip Vet Nursing); or equivalent
  • Registered as veterinary nurse with the South African Veterinary Council;
  • Four years' experience in veterinary nursing, supervision and administration of which two years in theatre practice

  • Ability to work weekends and outside normal working hours when required for continuous service delivery in the hospital.

  • Experience in veterinary hospital management
The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
