Job Summary:
  • Perform high quality ultrasound examinations using analytical and judgement skills to interpret complex images.
  • Formulate comprehensive, diagnostic, independently written reports for each examination.
  • Communicate distressing and unwelcome/unexpected news directly to patients using tact, empathy and diplomacy.
  • Communicate complex information regarding diagnosis/treatment directly to clinicians and patients.
  • Maintain personal clinical expertise in ultrasound scanning including ongoing CPD
  • Review, update and maintain the patients clinical records.
  • Participate in teaching students and clinicians in the field of ultrasound. Participate in the departmental QA and vetting of ultrasound requests.
  • Deal with conflicting demands from different staff groups at all levels.
  • Have flexible approach to work and ability to work under pressure of high workloads
Key Responsibilities:

1. Clinical Practice
1.1 Independently perform and report variety of scan which may include obstetrics, general abdominal, DVT, gynaecology and early pregnancy examinations.
1.2 To work according to ultrasound protocols and schemes of work and refer to Consultant Radiologist or senior sonographers for difficult / complex cases
1.3 Liaise with members A/E / GOPD and other teams,
1.4 Maintain a high standard of ultrasound practice and patient care.
1.5 Work with team to ensuring that extra, urgent or inpatient scans are accommodated.
1.6 Have Nuchal accreditation and DQASS registration (green flag).
1.7 Follow Fetal anomaly screening programme guidelines.
1.8 Follow Saving Babies Lives guidelines for 3rd trimester scanning.

2. Leadership and staff management
2.1 Responsible for own caseload.
2.2 Demonstrates high quality of work and lead by example.
2.3 Effective time management in high workload area.
2.4 Participate in vetting requests.
2.5 Promote good working relationships between multidisciplinary teams.
2.6 Supervises work of junior staff.

3. Management of Resources/Equipment
3.1 Maintain a high standard of equipment care ensuring that staff within the department carry out cleaning of the machines and environs on a daily basis. This includes checking all images have gone to the Picture archiving system.
3.2 Report and log all equipment faults to deputy / lead sonographer.
3.3 To manage the process of replenishment of ultrasound consumables by communicating the required quantity for re-ordering.
3.4 Able to handle information concerning waiting lists.

4. Professional Responsibility
4.1 Participate in the clinical governance process.
4.2 Attend and participate in clinical meetings. Ensure all hospital safety policies, procedures and fire regulations are observed.
4.3 Report any concerns/incidents that cannot be dealt with at a team level to the line manager.
4.4Liaise with departmental, ward and other colleagues to ensure the safe and efficient running of the department.
4.5 Carry out any other duties delegated by the line manager/Lead sonographer.
4.6 To take part in the data recording, clinical reporting and Quality assurance programmes needed to provide a high-quality service.
4.7 participate in research and audit projects.

Required Qualifications:
  • Postgraduate level qualification or equivalent
  • Postgraduate specialist diploma in medical or obstetric ultrasound
Knowledge/Experience:
  • Sound knowledge of clinical ultrasound and interpretation of complex information/images.
  • Cross sectional anatomy.
  • Common pathologies seen on Ultrasound.
  • CPD evidence
