An opportunity has arisen within Animal Rescue Organisation (ARO) for the position of

Kennel Hand in Cape Town.

Capacity:

Location: 5 Olieboom Road, Ottery

Responsible to:
Head Veterinarian


We are looking for a motivated, driven and knowledgeable Kennel Hand who has a passion for animal welfare and community upliftment.

The purpose of this role is to ensure that ARO's kennels function efficiently.

The duties include cleaning and sanitising kennels and common areas, daily checks on animals in our care, assist the Veterinarians, Animal Welfare Assistants and Theatre Supervisor and inform the Veterinarian on call of any emergency cases that arise.


RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Cleaning and grooming the animals.
  • Transporting animals to and from the kennels.
  • Be able to handle animals firmly but gently.
  • Ensuring that the animals have ample, fresh food and water at all times.
  • Cleaning animal waste, spilled food, hair, and other debris from the kennels.
  • Ensuring that the animal enclosures are maintained.
  • Disposing of trash in a timely manner.
  • Assure the correct storage of all equipment and food.
  • Administering treatment to animals under the supervision of the Veterinarian.
  • Accompanying animals on walks, if required.
  • Calming animals who are in distress.
  • Ensuring that the animals remain comfortable.
  • Evacuating all animals if an emergency occurs.
  • Providing basic aftercare.
  • Recognises and reports emergencies to the Veterinarian.
  • Advises Hospital Manager when service of equipment is needed.
  • Maintains the highest standards of care and professional conduct.
  • Be confident working with a range of different animals.
  • Help for medicine/drug inventory.
  • Have a good awareness of health and safety within the workplace.
  • Understands the importance of cleanliness of person, work area and equipment maintenance.

  • Available to work during evenings, and on weekends and public holidays, if required.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • A passion for Animal Welfare work.
  • Minimum of two years' experience with animal handling.
  • Fluency in 2 official South African languages, one of which must be English. Fluency in
Xhosa or Afrikaans will be an advantage.

  • Driver's license.
  • South African ID.

Starting Date:
Immediately

Working Hours:
Monday to Friday from 08h30 - 16h30.
