Qualifications and Required Skills:

  • B.Bibl, BInf degree or Bachelor's Degree plus Postgraduate Diploma in LIS and/or Honours degree with 7 years in an academic or research library of which 5 years should be in the management role of scholarly communication (Open scholarship, Research Data Management, Repositories and Copyright Services).
OR

  • Master's degree in Library and Information Science with 6 years recent experience in the field of Scholarly Communication in academic or research libraries of which 5 years should be in the management role of scholarly communication (Open scholarship, Research Data Management, Repositories and Copyright Services).

Research, Scholarly Communication, Digital Systems & Services

Skills:

  • Ability to guide researchers in leveraging Open Science, Open Scholarship, and research data management tools to improve the reproducibility of their research processes.
  • Experience in negotiating contracts and agreements regarding Open Access with publishers or other role players.
  • Experience working as a professional in a large researchintensive university, national research facility, or similar researchintensive institution.
  • Facilitate openaccess publishing processes to aid researchers in identifying outlets/publishers not requiring financial support for Article Processing Charges (APCs)/Book Publishing Charges, Transformative Agreements (TAs) etc.
  • Design and develop a research support services framework in collaboration with the Research Office.
  • Give input to repository developments, in collaboration with software developers, to enhance current institutional repositories to cater for future research demands and evolving standards.
  • Develop universityspecific guidelines on good research data practices, ensuring that Research Data Management (RDM) is integrated with existing research information management and publications systems.
  • Develop, promote, and contribute to a research support advisory service to academics on all aspects of the scholarly communication and publication processes, researcher online tools, and promoting research visibility and impact.
  • Take a strategic lead on the development of research collections and systems, in
collaboration with the Information Resources team about Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

  • Offer an advisory service on good practices in research data management including providing advice on data citation, licensing, copyright and IPR issues relating to RDM and assisting with the writing of data management plans and reports.
  • Develop and assist in the delivery of a coordinated programme of advocacy and training events for research staff, students, and support staff, working closely with colleagues in the Research Office and Faculties.
  • Financial management skills.
  • Knowledge of academic research publishing.

Technical Competencies

  • Knowledge of researcher profiles and identifiers, scholarly activity data systems and documentation methods, and/or related platforms, software, tools, or databases.
  • Implement automated mechanisms and data workflows to query databases to extract and manipulate publications and research impact metrics data.
  • Use and impact of information technology.

  • Give input to strategic leadership to advance research, education, and innovation on Open scholarship, Open Repositories, Research Data Management, Research Visibility and Impact, Information literacy instruction and Copyright services.
  • Oversee the evaluation, development, and ongoing maintenance of scholarly communications projects with faculty and students.
  • Oversee daytoday operations of Open scholarship, Research Data Management, Research and Training activities, and Copyright services.
  • Develop and implement an educational and instructional program to increase WITS' community awareness of copyright, Open Access, and other scholarly communications issues.
  • Manage and coordinate the Article Processing Charges (APCs) and Transformative Agreements (TAs) function for the University. ,
  • Lead, review and design research data management processes.
  • Support publications and research data repository services.
  • Track and oversee the ingest of faculty publications and dataset outputs.
  • Develop digital library platforms to provide access to digital collections, research data sets, and digital assets.
  • Work with the Department of Research & Innovation (DRI's) Legal, and other university groups to coordinate activities and problemsolve author agreements, compliance issues, and licensing.
  • Serve as a resource on licensing policies, as well as copyright compliance issues
  • Monitor national copyright and intellectual property trends and policy issues
