Job Purpose

  • To lead and manage primary and secondary loan syndication transactions in South Africa. These include transactions originated out of both the investment banking and property finance businesses in Nedbank CIB.
  • Lead and manage primary and secondary loan syndication transactions in South Africa.
  • Ensure primary syndications and secondary loan sales are executed at profitable levels.
  • Pitch to borrowers, take underwriting risk, respond to RFPs and bookrun transactions.
  • Drive the development and profile of the Syndication and Distribution franchise through implementation of market leading syndicated transactions and identifying and crowding in new liquidity pools for ZAR deals.
  • Produce expert pricing and structuring input and commentary on ZAR transactions.
  • Ensure KYC, legal and SA regulatory requirements are met in the normal course of business.
  • Aid the development of junior staff through provision of appropriate on the job training and mentorship.
  • Drive distribution collaboration efforts between Investment banking, Markets, Transactional Services and Coverage.

Responsibilities:

Financial Results

Ensure primary market syndications and secondary loan sales are executed at break even or profitable levels for NCIB through fee and /or margin retention for NCIB.


  • Play an integral part in the budgeting and forecasting process and understand risk concentration and appetite and drivers of profit and loss volatility.
    Stakeholder Relationships
Collaborate with internal partners, including Risk, Coverage, Transactional services and Markets to achieve optimal client outcomes.

  • Provide structuring guidance to debt origination teams and clients and actively participate in presenting proposals to clients, emphasizing the benefits of syndication and cofinancing.
    Processes and Policies
Ensure compliance by sanctions checking and adhering to (Money Laundering, Internal and Environmental) regulations, policies and procedures.

  • Ensure suitable governance and controls are applied and followed.
  • Manage deal implementation by advising on structuring, pricing and other market related matters, as well as coordinating and managing the legal process through to financial close for South African syndicated transactions and secondary loan sales.
  • Improve performance of colleagues by knowledge sharing and identifying suitable formal & informal training.
  • Get involved in nondeal specific projects by providing expert advice & input.
    Management information ("MI") and Reporting
Manage reporting framework to measure and monitor performance.

  • Develop, obtain and maintain risk MI for management including, progress on each deal in syndication, investor feedback, stage of interest, overall confidence in closing successfully.
  • Prepare and/or assist with reports and notifications relating to risk matters for the South African Head Office, the South African Banking Regulator (The South African Reserve Bank Prudential Authority).
    Development and Training
Improve personal capability by staying abreast of developments in Syndication markets. Identify training courses, conferences, webinars to assist in career development. Develop junior staff through on the job mentorship and training.
Business development

  • Get involved in nondeal specific projects by providing expert advice & input.\

Attend relevant Committees where required, as a member or invitee.

Contribute to a culture conducive to the achievement of transformation goals by participating in Nedbank Culture building initiatives (e.g. staff surveys etc).

  • Research and make recommendations for corporate citizenship initiatives in area of influence
  • Participate and support corporate responsibility initiatives for the achievement of business strategy (e.g. Green Strategy).
  • Seek opportunities to improve business processes, models and systems by identifying and recommending effective ways to operate and add value to Nedbank.
  • Essential Qualifications
  • NQF Level
  • Advanced Diplomas/National 1st Degrees


 Preferred Qualification
  • Professional Qualifications/Honour's Degree
  • Chartered Accountant, Chartered Financial Analyst, Master's Degree in Commerce, Sciences, Legal or other relevant field
  • Minimum Experience Level 812 years relevant sector / industry experience
