JUNIOR TECHNOLOGIST

QUALIFICATION ESSENTIAL: B.Sc. / B Tech / Diploma with microbiology, plant pathology, biochemistry or similar as main subjects
DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES AND AUTHORITIES
ADMINISTRATION – aspects in seed health testing and seed quality testing as well as the bacterial laboratory
o Assist in reception of documentation
o Responsible for receiving samples.
o Report sample reception where and if necessary.
o Communication and liaison with clients pertaining to sample reception, risks to sample integrity, documentation and errors to resolve before continuing with the sample processing and testing.
o Implementation and follow-up of corrections pertaining to 2.1.2 where applicable.
o Registration of samples.
o Documenting all testing activities in compliance with the protocols, procedures, ISTA, and ISO/IEC
o Recordkeeping in compliance with the protocols, procedures, requirements from the state department, ISTA and ISO/IEC
o Assist with archiving in compliance with the protocols, procedures, requirements from the state department, ISTA and ISO/IEC
o Assist in the stock control of chemicals, kits, reagents and critical consumables in compliance with protocols, procedures, ISTA, and ISO/IEC
Keeping the Certificates of Analysis and Safety Data Sheets on file current.
o Assist in the maintenance of Books of Life.
o Assist with the ad hoc reparation and maintenance where relevant and applicable as per protocols, procedures and methods of equipment and apparatus, including intermediate checks.
o Environmental monitoring of laboratories and equipment in the applicable section.
SCHEDULING OF AND SAMPLE PROCESSING – all test aspects in seed health testing and seed quality testing as well as the bacterial laboratory
o Assist in planning and scheduling of sample processing.
o Assist in arranging and allocating tasks in processing to laboratory assistants (permanent and/or part-time) where and when applicable to the sample type and through-put.
o Perform sample processing methods in collaboration with the senior technologists and seed analysts in compliance with protocols, procedures, ISTA, and ISO/IEC
o Preparation of buffers, reagents, and media necessary for sample processing in compliance with protocols, procedures, and ISO/IEC
o Perform sample processing methods in collaboration with senior technologists and seed analysts in compliance with protocols, procedures, ISTA, and ISO/IEC
THE EXECUTION OF TESTS AND METHODS – all test aspects in seed health testing and seed quality testing as well as the bacterial laboratory
o Assist in planning and scheduling sample analysis after sample preparation.
o Preparation of equipment, apparatus and consumables to use in test activities in the execution of seed quality testing (sample reduction; purity analysis; germination analysis), seed health testing (TSW determination; sample reduction; preparation of samples; dilution plating of samples; evaluation of microbial growth on media; isolation and identification of suspect isolates) and bacterial testing in compliance with protocols, procedures, ISTA, and ISO/IEC
o Performing seed quality testing (sample reduction; purity analysis; germination analysis), and seed health testing (TSW determination; sample reduction; preparation of samples; dilution plating of samples; evaluation of microbial growth on media; isolation and identification of suspect isolates) in compliance with protocols, procedures, ISTA, and ISO/IEC
o Plating out samples as part of methods of conventional assays in the detection and isolation of Ralstonia spp. as well as soft rot causing Enterobacteria in compliance with protocols, procedures, and ISO/IEC
Assist in the maintenance of the culture collection for bean pathogens, potato bacterial pathogens and registration thereof in compliance with protocols, procedures, and ISO/IEC
CONTINUED COMPETENCE AND SELF-IMPROVEMENT
o Keep knowledgeable in all aspects of sample handling and processing, methods and the techniques, reagents and kits as well as equipment and apparatus used to facilitate continuous improvement of laboratory and self by attending courses and doing literature studies.
o Improve knowledge about specific protocols, procedures, ISTA rules, and ISO/IEC 17025 in order to identify departures.
o Continued competence in understanding and application of ISTA and ISO/IEC 17025 in test aspects.
o Attendance of forums, congresses and seminars as recommended by Management.
o Investigative searches to possibilities of improvement, preventative actions, and minimising risks.
o Communicate/recommend possibilities to Management in acquiring approval.
LIASON
o Liaison with suppliers of products and services applicable the relevant test actions and laboratory.
o Liaison with the client/s.
o Attendance of Industry forums and congresses when recommended by Management.
SUPERVISORY CAPACITY AND TRAINING
o Responsible and supervising assistants (permanent or part-time) in sample handling and processing in relevant test activities.
o Responsible and supervise the preparation of media and reagents to use during sample processing and testing in compliance with protocols, procedures, ISTA, and ISO/IEC 17025 from time to time.
o Responsible for and/or supervise effective housekeeping in the bacterial laboratory and applicable areas.
