RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Liaison and incident management:
  • Liaise with the supervisor and team leader in order to complete tasks as required;
  • Liaise with student assistants to carry out task as you have assigned;
  • Engage with clients at the computer facility to establish the problem, and assist with resolution;
  • Resolve problems as they arise in engagement with relevant stakeholders;
  • Attend to general inquiries or refer it to the designated person, and provide clients with first line support;
  • Provide ongoing hardware and software troubleshooting service for users to attend to daytoday operating problems, and escalate problems identified in the environment to the relevant stakeholder;
  • Report specialised problems to the relevant supervisor, and refer unresolved incidents to the helpdesk;
  • Computer facilities management:
  • Identify requirements for the computer facilities, and make sure that the facilities are up to specification for the client needs e.g. computer system are loaded with the correct software for specific classes/assessments, etc.;
  • Confirm the availability of the computer facilities and schedule bookings accordingly, and complete scheduling for assistants in line with booking requests;
  • Assess computers according to booking, and ensure that software is working to address the need of the client as per the booking;
  • Ensure the tidiness of laboratories, and request cleaners to complete task as required;
  • Monitor and maintain the Tuks-Print service and the relevant printers within the computer facilities;
  • Monitor and maintain security in the computer facilities with access control, and maintain locks for computer equipment as per processes and procedures;
  • Compile and submit statistical reports to the relevant supervisor;
  • Maintain and monitor student accounts;
  • Computer based testing:
  • Attend to problems as they arise during computerbased testing;
  • Attend to problems relating to software and hardware;
  • Escalate the problem for resolution during testing, and make determination on problems as they arise;
  • Attend to seating arrangements for the test, set up general test administration processes as per client's request, and oversee the process;
  • Student Assistant supervision:
  • Attend to IT lab function at different computer facilities as required by management;
  • Oversee Student Assistant, and provide work output for the work day;
  • Monitor the output of Student Assistants, and provide training to them.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Grade 12 certificate;
  • A total of four years' experience as a Computer Laboratory Assistant, working in an educational computing facility supporting the academic goals of the institution;
  • Experience needs to include:
  • Client support;
  • Hardware and software support;

OR

  • A relevant threeyear National Diploma in IT;
  • A total of two years' experience as a computer Laboratory Assistant, working in an educational computing facility supporting the academic goals of the institution;
  • Experience needs to include:
  • Client support;
  • Hardware and software support.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Knowledge:
  • Microsoft active directory;
  • Linux;
  • Technical competencies:
  • Hardware and software support and maintenance;
  • Computer literacy;
  • Behavioural competencies:
  • Supervisory skills;
  • Ability to liaise with clients and resolve conflict;
  • Client support.

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • A threeyear degree or Advanced Diploma (NQF7) in IT;
  • Relevant certifications in IT courses (A+; N+; ITIL; Microsoft certifications, etc);
  • A total of two years' hands on experience as a computer Laboratory Assistant, working in an educational computing facility supporting the academic goals of the institution;
  • Experience needs to include:
  • Client support;
  • Practical experience in computer hardware and software maintenance;
  • Experience in computerbased training;
  • Ability to monitor and assist in the running of the CBT system with the focus on keeping the integrity of the system and the university.
The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent's level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
