The Team


The Africa team works to enable the foundation's ambitious goals of scaling evidence-based interventions that target a range of disease and socio-economic conditions which are endemic across Sub-Saharan Africa.

The team implements its responsibility through direct country engagement to deploy interventions and delivery models, and by building the partner architecture to replicate successful interventions and models across multiple countries.

The Program Advocacy and Communications (PAC) team works in partnership with program teams and other teams in the Global Policy and Advocacy (GPA) division to achieve their policy and finance goals by:

  • Developing and coordinating the execution of advocacy and communications strategies.
  • Using leadership and foundation voice to implement advocacy strategies.
  • Developing and managing a grant portfolio dedicated to achieving advocacy outcomes.
  • Directly advocating with sector leaders, influencers, media and government officials in order to achieve advocacy outcomes.
  • Leading issuespecific communications in service of advocacy goals.
  • Developing policy recommendations or proposals in partnership with programmatic and regional offices.

Your Role


You will be joining the Africa Team at an exciting time to shape and deliver an ambitious impact agenda for the foundation's Africa programs.

As
Deputy Director, Program Advocacy and Communications, Africa, you will partner with issue advocacy teams to achieve the foundation's policy and financing goals in Africa, in support of our programmatic and cross-cutting health and development outcomes.

You will lead a team of Program Officers working on issue-specific advocacy across the African continent and be an important partner to issue advocacy teams in PAC.

You will be based at the foundation's office in
Johannesburg, South Africa and report to the Director, PAC Africa.

What You'll Do

  • Contribute to continental, regional and country advocacy strategy development, working closely with colleagues to ensure inputs from across PAC, GPA, Africa and program teams.
  • Contribute to the development and implementation of policy and advocacy strategies to address policy and financing for health and development issues, in partnership with PAC, Africa and program teams.
  • Provide strategic guidance in the development of policy and advocacy grants to partners on the African continent.
  • Identify and assess key portfolio risks and develop and manage mitigation/contingency plans at the portfolio level.
  • Provide leadership on foundation engagement with partners and governments on the African continent, in partnership with Regional Representatives.
  • Advise, mentor, and support colleagues within the team and their grantees in the design, enhancement, and execution of projects, initiatives and engagements.
  • This role manages people and is responsible for hiring the talent needed to achieve our goals, ensuring successful employee onboarding, communicating performance expectations, creating goal alignment, integrating project and change management, giving and seeking feedback, providing coaching, measuring progress and holding people accountable, supporting employee development, and recognizing achievement and lessons learned.

Your Experience

  • At least 12 years of experience strategizing and implementing high quality programs, managing budgets, and ensuring highquality deliverables in the public, nonprofit sector or private sector across Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Strong team leadership experience, including a demonstrable track record of providing team management and leadership, and fostering a culture of collaboration, inclusivity, accountability, consistency.
  • Policy, advocacy, and communication expertise: indepth experience in advocacy for public health and economic opportunity programs, with specific experience is domestic resources mobilization, policy design, adoption and scale up in health, as well as interventions in economic opportunity, such as agriculture, education, financial inclusion, gender equality.
