Summary
Primary school teachers are responsible for the education and development of children in grades 1-7. They plan and deliver lessons, assess student progress, and provide support to students and their families.

Primary school teachers play a vital role in shaping the future of their students, and they must be passionate about education and have a strong desire to make a difference in the lives of children.


General duties and expectations

Create and implement a curriculum that meets the needs of all students. This includes developing lesson plans, choosing instructional materials, and assessing student learning.

Assess student learning and provide feedback. Teachers use a variety of methods to assess student learning, such as tests, quizzes, and projects. They also provide feedback to students on their work so that they can improve.

Manage classroom behavior and create a positive learning environment. Teachers need to be able to manage classroom behavior effectively so that all students can learn. They also need to create a positive and supportive learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and taking risks.

Collaborate with other teachers and staff to ensure that all students are successful. Teachers often work together to develop lesson plans, share resources, and support each other's students. They also collaborate with other staff members, such as school counselors and administrators, to ensure that all students have the support they need to succeed.

Additional duties and expectations for private school teachers

Teach specific religious or moral values. Some private schools are affiliated with a particular religion or denomination, and teachers in these schools may be expected to teach specific religious or moral values.

Maintain a high level of professionalism. Private schools often have high expectations for their teachers in terms of professionalism. This includes dressing appropriately, being punctual, and being respectful to students, parents, and colleagues.

Participate in professional development activities. Private schools typically require their teachers to participate in professional development activities on a regular basis. This helps teachers stay up-to-date on the latest teaching methods and research.

In addition to the above duties and expectations, private school teachers may also be expected to:

  • Coach sports teams or lead extracurricular activities
  • Oversee homework clubs or study groups
  • Participate in school governance or committees
  • Attend social events sponsored by the school
Overall, private school teachers are expected to be highly qualified, dedicated, and professional. They play an important role in educating and shaping the minds of young people.

In short the Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan, prepare, and deliver lessons in accordance with the South African curriculum
  • Follow Montessori Philosophy of teaching
  • Assess student progress and provide feedback
  • Maintain discipline in the classroom and create a positive learning environment
  • Collaborate with other teachers and staff to develop and implement school policies and programs
  • Communicate with parents and families about their child's progress
  • Participate in professional development activities to stay uptodate on the latest teaching methods and best practices

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in education or a related field
  • Teaching qualification from a recognized institution
  • Experience teaching primary school students is preferred
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Commitment to student success

Additional Information
This is a full-time position. Some evening and weekend work may be required.


The duties and expectations for a teacher teaching Grade 5-7 in a private school are similar to those for teachers in public schools, but there may be some additional requirements.
