Main purpose:


The University of the Witwatersrand seeks to appoint an experienced Evaluation Specialist to implement monitoring and evaluation systems for university capacity development programmes.

The position requires the design, implementation, management, monitoring and evaluation of student success programmes.

The incumbent will be responsible for ensuring the effective monitoring and evaluation of programmes, promoting a culture of learning, generating accurate and timely reports, and facilitating evidence-based decision-making.

It is imperative for the incumbent to have strong project management and communication skills as well as an excellent background in evaluation methodologies, data analysis, and reporting.


Key responsibilities:

Design and Implementation of Monitoring and Evaluation Systems

Conduct evidence-based evaluation research (qualitative/ quantitative and/or mixed methods)

Capacity Building and Training, Collaboration and Networking

Reporting and publication

Other duties as required and assigned

Minimum Requirements:

  • Masters Qualification (NQF Level 9).
  • At least 5 years of professional experience in monitoring, evaluation and reporting.

Desirable Requirements:


Minimum of a Masters in one of the following disciplines: Evaluation Studies, Research Psychology, Social Sciences in general, Statistics or related disciplines.


Key Competencies:

  • Strong knowledge of monitoring and evaluation methodologies, including qualitative and quantitative data collection methods, data analysis, and reporting.
  • Skills in advanced quantitative data analysis (e.g. regression models, cluster analysis,, social network analysis).
  • Proficiency in using statistical analysis software (e.g. CBIMS, PMBOK, SPSS, STATA, etc.) and data visualization tools.
  • Proficiency in using qualitative data analysis packages (e.g. , MAXQDA, QDA, NVivo, QDA Miner or Quirkos etc.).
  • A healthy interest in conducting research and analysis of M&E practices and systems in higher education.
  • Excellent project management skills, with the ability to prioritise tasks, meet deadlines, and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong analytical and problemsolving abilities, with attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex information in a clear and concise manner.
  • Experience in designing and delivering training and capacity building initiatives.
  • Ability to work effectively in a multicultural and multidisciplinary team.
  • Proficiency in scientific writing as demonstrated by published articles in peerreviewed journals.
