Role purpose:This role is responsible for reviewing, implementing, and advising on electrical power systems for telecommunications infrastructure, with a focus on colocation sites and future technology deployments or upgrades by customers. The role ensures compliance with SANS 10142-1, applies risk-based engineering principles, and delivers reliable, safe, and cost-effective power upgrades to support network expansion and multi-operator sharing. Key Accountabilities Power Applications & Review Review, validate, and provide consent for all co-location power application requests coming into sites. Validate requests for technical and contractual feasibility against load capacity, redundancy, and commercial contracts. Undertake comparative site condition analysis to identify risks and constraints that may limit co-location or network expansion. Provide clearly documented consent with technical rationale, including timely communication of new site requirements to key stakeholder groups. Risk-Based Engineering & Compliance Audit Apply risk-based engineering principles for all new power installations and upgrade projects to identify, assess, and mitigate risks before implementation. Monitor regulatory developments, electrical codes, compliance standards, best practices, and emerging energy technologies to ensure future compliance of power designs. Serve as technical authority for electrical power system safety audits, risk assessments, and remediation plans. Electrical Survey Report Analysis & Evaluation Review and analyse electrical survey reports to determine system performance, load capacity, resiliency, and site-specific risks. Evaluate system performance against resiliency, redundancy, and availability requirements outlined in SLAs and technical specifications. Identify PSU issues, bottlenecks, equipment malfunctions, or compliance deficiencies and recommend corrective action. Convert complex survey data into concise technical reports and recommendations for management decisions. Stakeholder Engagement Collaborate with internal teams (engineering, operations, capital projects, network planning) to ensure power upgrades align with network rollout and modernization plans. Engage with external contractors, electrical utilities, and MNO partners to ensure projects meet technical standards, timelines, and SLAs. Keep stakeholders updated on project progress, risks, and technical recommendations. Build and maintain strong relationships with cross-functional teams to address issues proactively and avoid project delays. Key Performance Indicators Quality and compliance of electrical designs and upgrades. Adherence to SANS 10142-1 and SLA obligations. Accuracy of load calculations and upgrade recommendations. Timely delivery of scopes, drawings, and project/technical support. Improved reliability, efficiency, and sustainability of site power systems. Power Upgrade Design & Implementation Design and recommend site power upgrades that meet colocation requirements and future technology needs (e.g., 5G). Redesign existing installations where applicable, improving energy efficiency, resiliency, and lifecycle cost. Investigate and implement renewable and hybrid power solutions (solar, wind, battery storage, diesel hybrid systems) to reduce environmental impact and improve sustainability. Coordinate with capital project and engineering design teams to produce detailed engineering drawings, schematics, and specifications. Project Scope of Work (SoW) Development Develop technical Scope of Work (SoW) documents that outline design requirements, compliance needs, and implementation processes. Incorporate risk-based considerations to inform contractors of critical risks and compliance requirements. Provide input into budget estimates, capital planning, and prioritization for power infrastructure upgrades. Ensure SoW documents are enforceable for contractors, project managers, and operations teams. Technical Competencies Ability to design, read, and interpret electrical schematics and wiring diagrams. Strong knowledge of telecommunications systems and equipment, including transformers, rectifiers, batteries, generators, hybrid systems, renewable energy systems, and cooling technologies. Skilled in load analysis, project costing, and risk documentation. Ability to integrate sustainability and energy efficiency into designs. Core Skills & Attributes Analytical with strong risk awareness. High attention to detail and a safety-first mindset. Strong communicator able to simplify complex technical topics. Effective collaborator across engineering, operations, and commercial teams. Ownership mentality with integrity and commercial awareness. Ability to adapt to evolving technologies and industry complexity. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, National Diploma in Power Systems, or related field. Experience 3–5 years’ experience in electrical power systems design, analysis, or auditing. Telecom or ICT infrastructure power management experience (highly advantageous). Strong knowledge of SANS 10142-1 and electrical compliance frameworks. Experience with risk-based engineering, load analysis, and project scoping. Proven experience managing power upgrades for colocation or future network deployment (e.g., 5G).
