Job Title:
Junior Communications and Marketing Coordinator

Location:
Braamfontein, Johannesburg

Working Style:
Hybrid (3 days in office per work)

Application Closing Date:
28 November 2025

Who we are

The Legal Resources Centre is South Africa's oldest independent non profit public interest law centre, with offices across the country. We empower individuals and communities through the law, promote social justice, challenge inequality and help realise the human rights set out in the South African Constitution. We work alongside communities to confront systemic injustice, with a particular focus on land, education, gender-based violence and digital rights. Our lawyers, researchers and communications team work together so that the stories behind our cases are heard, understood and acted on.

Why is now a great time to join the LRC

We are increasing our public facing work and investing more in how we tell the stories behind our cases and campaigns. Our social media channels are growing, our video and podcast work is expanding, and we are engaging with new audiences, from community-based organisations to funders and partners. We need someone who can help us show our work clearly and consistently, keep our platforms active and accurate, and help us close the gap between the law in the Constitution and the lived reality of the majority of people in South Africa.

Where you will fit in

You will report to the Communications and Marketing Officer and be part of the Communications Department. You will work closely with programme teams across land, education, gender based violence, big tech and other projects, as well as with fundraising and operations when needed.

Your role sits at the centre of our outward facing work, turning internal updates into external content and making sure our social media presence supports our legal and advocacy strategies.

Key responsibilities

Responsibilities may shift over time in line with the needs of the Communications Department. The list below sets out the core areas of work, but is not exhaustive.

Internal communication and liaison:

  • Support training on branding, consent and communications so staff understand and follow LRC guidelines

Content creation:

  • Draft clear social media copy, short news updates, basic website text, and support blog posts, opinion pieces, impact stories and litigation summaries for LRC platforms
  • Create short form video content and design campaign and social media visuals such as tiles, infographics and simple motion graphics in line with LRC brand guidelines
  • Assist with layout for reports, publications and the annual report using agreed templates

Social media and community engagement:

  • Monitor comments, messages and mentions on social media, respond in line with LRC values, and engage with partner content to help build and maintain online relationships
  • Track relevant trending topics and hashtags, share brief daily updates with the Communications and Marketing Officer, and help flag real time engagement opportunities and draft rapid response copy or talking points
  • Assist the Communications and Marketing Officer with daily posting on social media when needed

Events and multimedia coverage:

  • Provide photography and videography at events, site visits, workshops, panel discussions, court cases and other activities in line with consent and safety guidelines
  • Help coordinate printed and branded materials, including checking proofs, tracking production, arranging delivery and promoting events on the website, email and social channels
  • Help manage consent and shot lists for photos and videos and draft short, timely post event write ups for the website, newsletter and social media

Media support and external relations:

  • Maintain and update media contact and press distribution lists and support preparation and distribution of media advisories, alerts and press statements
  • Help coordinate media interviews, prepare basic briefing notes for spokespeople, and assist with media monitoring, capturing coverage and keeping an organised record of mentions
  • Help share selected stories and updates with key media partners and allied organisations

Design and brand management:

  • Create email signatures and business cards for staff using approved templates and help maintain the official LRC letterhead and ensure correct use
  • Assist in keeping brand templates and assets up to date, shared folders organised, and support staff to use LRC branding correctly, referring colleagues to the Communications Policy when needed

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree
  • At least two years of experience in a similar communications or marketing role, with a strong focus on social media content and coordination
  • Advantageous experience in a nonprofit, civil society or public interest setting
  • Advantageous exposure to legal issues, either through work at a public interest law organisation or through legal studies
  • An affinity for creative content creation, including strong writing skills, comfort with basic design tools such as Canva and interest in simple video creation and editing
  • Strong technological proficiencies
  • Strong organisation skills, attention to detail and the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines
  • A hard working and curious approach, with a real willingness to get stuck in and to grow both the role and yourself over time
  • A self-starter mindset with the ability to work independently while staying aligned with team priorities and direction
  • Ability to work well in a diverse team and to build respectful relationships across programmes and offices
  • Grit and resilience, with the ability to keep going through pressure, to learn quickly and to see feedback as part of growth

Application Process

You will be asked to complete a Google Form and upload your personal information, CV, degree certificate and a short content sample so we can assess your content creation skills.

If you are shortlisted for the second round, you will be invited to record and submit a short video responding to a set question.
