Job Description

The Cleaning Supervisor ensures all production areas, equipment, and facilities within the facility are cleaned and sanitised according to strict hygiene, safety, and regulatory standards. The role includes supervising cleaning staff, planning sanitation schedules, compiling SOPs, conducting inspections, maintaining chemical controls, and ensuring compliance with food safety, occupational health & safety and environmental management guidelines.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Supervision

  • Supervise and coordinate cleaning staff across storage, production, packaging, staff comfort facility, yard and administrative office areas.
  • Assign daily cleaning tasks and ensure completion within required timelines.
  • Provide on-the-job training for staff regarding food-safe cleaning practices and chemical handling.
  • Conduct performance evaluations and provide feedback or corrective action when needed.
  • Liaise with Production and Maintenance teams regarding opportunities of improvement (i.e.) on waste trends, hygienic designs etc. from observations during cleaning
  • Form part of the Food Safety team

Hygiene & Sanitation

  • Ensure all equipment, surfaces, floors, and food-contact areas are cleaned and sanitised to regulatory, company and customer standards.
  • Oversee deep cleaning activities
  • Verify that correct cleaning chemicals, dilution rates, cleaning tools, and PPE are used for each area.
  • Ensure cross-contamination (i.e.)
    allergen, foreign object, chemical
    etc. controls are followed during cleaning.

Compliance & Quality Control

  • Enforce compliance with food safety, occupational health & safety and environmental health standards.

  • Conduct routine hygiene inspections, document findings and corrective actions.

  • Ensure all findings raised are adequately investigated and corrective actions implemented
  • Ensure that swab tests are conducted in accordance with the testing schedule
  • Conduct cleaning validation tests, ensuring they remain up to date and relevant
  • Ensure cleaning records, checklists, and sanitation logs are completed accurately.
  • Prepare reports for audits and assist during customer, regulatory, or certification audits.

4. Inventory & Equipment Management

  • Monitor stock levels of cleaning chemicals, PPE, and hygiene tools; place orders as required.
  • Ensure all cleaning equipment is maintained, calibrated (if required), and in safe working condition.
  • Implement safe chemical storage and dilution practices.

5. Health & Safety

  • Enforce safe working practices, including use of PPE and proper chemical handling.
  • Report hazards, near misses, and any equipment issues.
  • Ensure staff follow lockout/tagout procedures during equipment cleaning.
  • Ensure correct waste management practices of waste produced due to / as a result of cleaning and sanitation

6. Support Duties

  • Participate in hands-on cleaning during staff shortages or intensive deep-clean operations.
  • Work closely with production teams to coordinate cleaning around production schedules.

Requirements

  • National Diploma, bachelor's degree in food technology, Microbiology, Engineering or related field advantageous
  • Minimum of 1-2 years of experience in a similar role
  • Knowledge of food safety standards and regulatory requirements
  • Proficient in root-cause analysis and corrective action reporting
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong attention to detail and communication skills
  • Ability to work and remain resilient in a fast-paced and team-oriented environment
  • Positive attitude toward food safety and occupational health & safety culture
