Clinical Educator: Palliative Care

UCT Division of Interdisciplinary Palliative Care and Medicine (IPCM) seeks to appoint a professional palliative care nurse or social worker as a Clinical Educator (30 hrs per week) to support the integration of palliative care in three Western Cape sites as part of the Healthy Futures programme.

The main purpose of this position is to provide training, mentorship and evaluation of the proposed primary care integration of palliative care in the Vredenburg, Heideveld and George areas. This will form part of the Healthy Futures Programme. The position is 30 hours a week for a 4-year contract and requires face-to-face teaching, mentorship, and site visits.

Requirements at both levels:

• Hold a degree in nursing or social work and a postgraduate qualification in palliative care at NQF level 8.
• Registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a registered/professional nurse or as a social worker with the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP/Council)
• Three years' experience in palliative care.
• Knowledge of palliative care policy, health equity and human rights for health.
• Knowledge of low- and middle-income health systems, the health sector and its services as it pertains to Palliative Care.
• Demonstrable previous experience in teaching and mentorship.
• Demonstrate previous experience working at the primary care level and home care services.
• Organisational skills.
• Verbal skills in at least 2 of the languages of the Western Cape
• Excellent written communication skills.
• Ability to work within an interdisciplinary team
• Ability to build and maintain effective partnerships and relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
• Access to own transport to visit clinical sites and other off-campus meeting venues and may require overnight stays.

Responsibilities:

This role includes teaching, mentorship, research, and social responsiveness, with attention to issues of transformation and equity. In addition, the successful candidate will be required to perform administrative functions at the Divisional, Departmental, Faculty, and University levels if needed.
