Position overview
The American International School of Johannesburg seeks a dynamic English educator to join its faculty for the school year. The English teacher will help students as both individuals and collaborators, will foster an appreciation of language and literature, and will provide a joyful and supportive learning environment. Candidates should be energetic, collaborative, and progressive-minded.
This position will consist of a full-time assignment in the High School, which could include sections of Grade 9 English, Grade 10 English, Grade 11/12 AISJ English (taught with mixed grades on a two-year rotation), and IBDP Language & Literature. The position will entail teaching across grade levels. The High School operates on an 8-period rotating block schedule, and teachers are assigned to teach 6 of 8 blocks as well as an Eagle Forum advisory class.
The English Teacher develops positive relationships with families, AISJ team members, and the greater AISJ community. The English Teacher is an active community leader, contributing to curricular and extra-curricular initiatives that promote community and wellbeing

Qualifications, Experiences, & Role Specific Requirements
The English teacher should have:
- Current secondary license or certification for teaching English, with a preference for a master's degree
- A minimum of an undergraduate degree in English
- Recent training in IBDP Language & Literature
- An understanding of High School philosophy and an ability to communicate with HS students
- A willingness to embrace an inclusive school environment while focusing on differentiated instruction and integrated learning
- Successful experience teaching HS English
- A positive attitude and strong interpersonal skills
- Expertise in building active, collaborative classroom programs, which encourage problem solving, critical thinking skills, and develop a sense of classroom community and trust
- Ability to differentiate instruction for all learners
- Ability to establish and participate in collaborative structures
- Ability to standardize assessments to ensure a collective understanding of achievement
- A solid understanding of HS organization, programs, and students
- A willingness and ability to reflect and critically examine teaching practices, set goals, and commit to continuous improvement
- An understanding of the Common Core Standards and concept-driven learning
- Experience in teaching research and writing in the content area
- Experience in teaching a concept-based curriculum
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- A team player with the ability to take initiative
- Curriculum and assessment development, particularly competency-based learning and planning using Understanding By Design
- Using hands-on engagements and assessments to help students make connections to the world around them
- Technology integration and the ability to teach the appropriate use of AI
- Experience in creating differentiated and personalized learning experience
- The assignment of this subject is dependent upon the strengths of the successful candidate and will be made by the principal
- Communicate and liaise with other school colleagues to promote social and emotional awareness
- Communicate and liaise regularly with team members about planning and assessment

- Maintain up-to-date records of assessment, attendance, planning, reports, conferences, and communication with parents

Work
Number of Workdays: Monday through Friday one hundred and eighty-eight) days per school year.
Workday: 7:10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. daily on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday, and from 7:10 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Wednesday.
Full-Time Teacher: Secondary Teachers will teach 6 of 8 in the block schedule.
Other Duties As Assigned: The Teacher will be expected to perform any work assigned to them that is within their skills and capabilities and to be flexible about changes to this function that may be required from time to time for operational reasons. This includes other duties as assigned by their supervisor from time to time.
