Role Overview

The
Technical Writer
– Product Documentation is essential to clearly communicate complex technical information about our software and hardware products. This role ensures that all product documentation, including user manuals, installation guides, and technical datasheets, is accurate, accessible, and aligned with industry standards. By translating technical details into clear, user-friendly content, the Technical Writer supports product usability, customer satisfaction, and the overall success of our products in the market.

Produces detailed and accurate product documentation that meets quality standards, ensuring customers and technicians have a thorough understanding of product functions, specifications, and usage.

Maintains consistent terminology, format, and accessibility across all documentation, making information easy to navigate and comprehend for a diverse audience.

Support for Product Development and Testing:

Collaborates with engineering and product teams to integrate documentation processes into product development, helping to identify documentation needs early and contributing to smoother product launches.

Extended key responsibilities

Development of Product Documentation:

• Creates, updates, and maintains user manuals, technical specifications, quick-start guides, and installation documents.
• Ensures all documentation aligns with the latest product designs, features, and engineering updates.

Managing Digital Documentation Platforms:

• Oversees the organization, storage, and accessibility of digital documentation, ensuring all technical product documents are up-to-date and accessible across platforms.
• Compile documentation in line with ISO 9001 requirements.
• Implements and manages version control processes to track updates and ensure the latest versions are always available to users.
• Coordinates with IT and other departments to ensure documentation platforms are secure, user-friendly, and compatible with various devices.

Standardization and Consistency:

• Develops and enforces a standard template, terminology, and style guide for product documentation.
• Ensures that all documents, regardless of product or type, maintain a consistent and professional look and feel.

Collaboration with Cross-Functional Teams:

• Works closely with engineering, product management, and quality assurance teams to gather information and clarify technical details.
• Participates in product development meetings to stay informed of new features and design changes impacting documentation.

User-Centered Content Design:

• Research user requirements and tailors documentation to suit diverse audiences, including end users, technicians, and customer support teams.
• Creates visual aids (diagrams, screenshots) and interactive content to enhance understanding and engagement.

Skills, knowledge, experience and talents required for role

Education

Diploma or bachelor's degree in Communications, English, Journalism, Information Technology, Engineering or a related technical field (or equivalent work experience) is preferred.

Experience

0-5 years of experience in technical writing, preferably within manufacturing, engineering, or technology sectors, with a focus on complex technical products.

Knowledge and skills

• Proficiency in documentation tools (e.g.DocuWiki, Google Docs, Microsoft Word, Excel) and familiarity with illustration software (e.g., Adobe Illustrator, INdesign, Figma) for creating visual aids.
• Understanding of BMS, EMS, or related battery technology is an asset.
• Basic familiarity with content management systems (CMS) and version control software (e.g., Git) for document tracking and updates.
• Strong attention to detail, especially with complex technical details
• Analytical and proactive in identifying and addressing information gaps in documentation.
• Excellent written communication skills with a user-centered focus
• Ability to organize, prioritize and effectively multi-task daily and meet deadlines.
• Self-motivated with strong organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Attention to detail and commitment to high-quality standards.
• ISO 9001 knowledge will be an advantage.
• Excellent English skills, Afrikaans is a plus.
