Mission for Inner City Cape Town

The Mission for Inner City Cape Town is seeking a Senior Graphic Designer / Brand & Communications Officer to join our multidisciplinary team working at the intersection of design, urbanism, and social impact. We're looking for someone with a strong design sensibility, a high level of technical skill, and a genuine care for the details that shape both our public-facing and internal work.

About the Role

You'll play a central role in defining and maintaining the Mission's visual identity, producing high-quality design work that supports our communication, placemaking, and activation efforts across the city.

This is a dynamic environment — some work is planned months in advance, while other moments call for quick, responsive design thinking. Adaptability and care in your craft are equally important.

Key Responsibilities

  • Produce design work across editorial layouts, brand identities, signage and wayfinding, presentations, social media templates, and print collateral.
  • Develop and maintain brand architecture systems and standards manuals for the Mission and its subsidiary brands.
  • Create mockups and visualisations to communicate concepts within the team and to external partners.
  • Support occasional video or motion-based communication needs, such as short-form edits or basic animations.
  • Uphold the Mission's commitment to high-quality, intentional design — ensuring every output, from an internal report to a street-level banner, meets our design standards.

Required Skills

  • Strong proficiency in the Adobe Creative Suite, with an emphasis on:

  • Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign (essential daily tools)

  • Premiere Pro (or equivalent video editing software) and After Effects (useful for occasional tasks)

  • Excellent grasp of layout, typography, and brand systems.

  • Ability to work confidently in physical media, including paint, ink, or dry media, and to contribute to on-site activations or installations within the inner city.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
  • A proactive, flexible mindset and comfort working both independently and within a small, collaborative team.

Nice to Have

  • Background or interest in architecture, urban design, or the built environment.
  • Illustration capabilities (digital or hand-rendered).
  • Experience in placemaking, public communication, or community design projects.
