About the Role

We are seeking a hands-on, experienced 
Part-Time Accountant
 to provide high-level financial oversight and guidance to our growing business. This role involves 
managing and mentoring an in-house bookkeeper
, ensuring the accuracy and integrity of financial records, overseeing statutory compliance, and offering strategic input on budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning. The ideal candidate is a self-starter who can work independently, is comfortable in a mentorship role, and thrives in a dynamic SME environment.

Key Responsibilities

Oversight & Mentorship

  • Supervise and support an existing full-time bookkeeper
  • Review and sign off on reconciliations, journals, and ledger entries
  • Train and upskill the bookkeeper where needed (e.g., new systems, compliance)
  • Ensure consistency and accuracy in bookkeeping practices

Financial Management & Reporting

  • Prepare monthly management accounts (P&L, Balance Sheet, Cash Flow) for 3 companies
  • Conduct variance analysis against budget
  • Develop financial dashboards and reporting tools for directors
  • Provide financial insights to support decision-making
  • Prepare yearly trial balance and submit tax returns

Budgeting & Strategic Planning

  • Collaborate with management to develop annual and rolling budgets
  • Perform cash flow forecasting and scenario planning
  • Offer input into cost-saving strategies and long-term financial sustainability

Statutory & Tax Compliance

  • Oversee VAT returns, EMP201s, EMP501s, and other SARS submissions
  • Ensure compliance with PAYE, UIF, SDL and company income tax
  • Manage preparation of annual returns for CIPC
  • Liaise with external auditors, tax practitioners, and SARS when required
  • Update company beneficial ownership as needed

Systems & Process Optimisation

  • Evaluate and optimise current accounting and reporting systems
  • Support transition to or improvement of platforms (e.g., Xero, Sage, QuickBooks)
  • Implement internal controls and ensure adherence to accounting policies

Requirements & Qualifications

  • Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • Minimum 10 years' experience in a similar accounting role
  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., Sage, Xero, QuickBooks, Excel)
  • Solid understanding of South African tax law and statutory requirements
  • Proven ability to manage junior staff and lead process improvements
