As our school community continues to grow, we are seeking a dedicated,compassionate,and experienced Special Needs Teacher to join our team on a part-time basis. This role is crucial in ensuring that learners with diverse learning needs receive tailored support to thrive academically, socially, and emotionally.

Position Overview

The Special Needs Teacher will work closely with classroom teachers and the School Principal to identify and support children with various learning differences. This includes but is not limited to dyslexia, dyscalculia, ADD, ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), sensory processing challenges, and speech or language delays.

The successful candidate will design and implement individualised education plans (IEPs), adapt curriculum materials, and provide both in-class and small-group interventions. The role also involves building strong partnerships with families and external specialists to create a holistic support system for each learner.

Key Responsibilities

1. Learner Support & Individualised Planning

  • Assess learners' needs using diagnostic tools, classroom observations, and teacher referrals.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor Individualised Education Plans (IEPs) tailored to each child's unique learning profile.
  • Deliver targeted interventions and remedial lessons focusing on literacy, numeracy, and social-emotional development.
  • Adapt instructional materials, activities, and assessments to meet the needs of diverse learners.

2. Inclusive Classroom Collaboration

  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to modify lesson plans, teaching strategies, and classroom environments.
  • Co-teach or support lessons where needed to ensure inclusive participation of all learners.
  • Provide teachers with guidance on differentiated instruction, behavioural management, and inclusive practices.

3. Monitoring & Evaluation

  • Track learner progress through qualitative and quantitative methods.
  • Maintain detailed records of assessments, progress notes, and reports for internal and external review.
  • Regularly update IEPs and share progress with families and school leadership.

4. Family & Community Engagement

  • Communicate regularly with parents and caregivers about learners' progress, challenges, and strategies for support at home.
  • Facilitate workshops or meetings with families to build awareness around special educational needs.
  • Liaise with external professionals (e.g., occupational therapists, speech therapists, psychologists) for additional learner support.

5. Professional Development & School Support

  • Stay informed on current best practices, research, and innovations in special needs education.
  • Contribute to the professional learning culture of the school through collaboration and knowledge sharing.
  • Support Molo Mhlaba's inclusive education strategy and contribute to creating a nurturing, safe, and affirming environment for all learners.

Key Requirements

Educational Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Education (B.Ed) or an equivalent qualification.
  • Specialisation or certification in Inclusive Education, Special Needs Education, or Remedial Education (essential).
  • Valid SACE registration.
  • Valid Police Clearance and Form 30.
  • Valid First Aid Certificate.

Experience

  • Minimum of 3 years' experience working with children with special educational needs in a school or therapeutic setting.
  • Proven experience supporting learners with dyslexia, dyscalculia, ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorders, and other learning differences.
  • Experience developing and managing IEPs and implementing evidence-based interventions.

  • Deep understanding of child development, learning disabilities, and inclusive pedagogical approaches.
  • Strong classroom management and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with teachers, families, and specialists.
  • Patience, empathy, creativity, and flexibility in problem-solving.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.

Working Hours

This is a part-time position, with flexible scheduling options. The teacher may be required to work a combination of mornings and/or afternoons, depending on learner needs and school programming.
