POSITION: CHROME MINING SUPERVISOR (VIRGIN GROUND DEVELOPMENT)

Location: Limpopo

Reports To: Mine Manager / Operations Director

Contract Type: Full-time

  1. POSITION OVERVIEW

The Chrome Mining Supervisor will be responsible for leading and executing the establishment of a new chrome mining operation from virgin ground. This role requires advanced geological interpretation skills, strong operational leadership, and hands-on mining expertise. The Supervisor must be capable of identifying chrome-bearing seams through outcrops, managing early exploration activities, and establishing safe and productive mining workflows from inception.

  1. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

A. Geological Identification & Field Assessment


• Conduct on-site geological assessments to identify chrome seams from outcrops and exposed geological features.


• Interpret rock formations, stratigraphy, and surface anomalies to determine optimal mining points.


• Map seam orientation, dip, thickness, and continuity to guide pit layout and extraction planning.


• Perform initial trenching, sampling, and grade checks to confirm ore quality.

B. Mine Establishment & Early-Stage Operations


• Lead the development of a new mine layout, including defining entry points, pit outlines, and access roads.


• Supervise clearing, stripping, and initial excavation activities.


• Oversee the deployment, coordination, and productivity of heavy machinery (excavators, FELs, ADTs, screens, etc.).


• Set up temporary operational structures, including equipment staging areas, stockpiles, and safety zones.

C. Production Planning & Execution


• Develop short-term and long-term production schedules aligned with seam conditions.


• Monitor ore quality, tonnages, dilution control, and recovery rates.


• Coordinate ROM (Run of Mine) extraction and movement to crushing/screening operations.


• Ensure seamless integration from mobilization to steady-state production.

D. Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance


• Enforce strict adherence to mine safety protocols and regulatory requirements.


• Identify geotechnical risks (slope stability, water ingress, unsafe ground) and take corrective action.


• Ensure compliance with environmental standards, including waste handling and land disturbance management.

E. Team Leadership & Workforce Coordination


• Lead and supervise operators, spotters, assistants, and field workers.


• Provide practical training on equipment operation, safe pit practices, and correct extraction techniques.


• Ensure clear communication of daily targets, safety instructions, and operational changes.

F. Reporting & Documentation


• Maintain accurate records of overburden removal, ore extraction, seam mapping, and daily production.


• Provide operational feedback and recommendations for continuous improvement.


• Report geological findings and seam updates to management in real-time.

  1. REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE

Technical Competencies


• Proven experience identifying chrome seams from outcrops and natural exposures.


• Strong geological mapping and interpretation capabilities.


• Advanced understanding of chrome ore characteristics, mining sequences, and beneficiation flow.


• Skilled in early-stage mine development and open-pit mining operations.

Operational & Leadership Skills


• Ability to manage multiple teams and equipment units during mobilization.


• Strong field decision-making and problem-solving abilities.


• Capable of designing and implementing safe mining layouts on virgin ground.

Qualifications


• Minimum 5–10 years operational mining experience (chrome preferred).


• Supervisory or foreman-level experience in open-pit operations.


• Certificate, Diploma, or Trade Qualification in Mining/Geology/Operations (advantageous).


• Valid driver's license and relevant competency certificates.
