Financial Accountant

Your reconciliations could balance books. Or they could balance books that unlock financial access for millions.
You've closed month-ends. You've balanced the books. You've filed the returns. You're technically strong, articles-qualified, and probably good at what you do.
But when was the last time your reconciliations enabled something bigger than just compliant financials?
At M-KOPA, we've grown from 5 million to 7 million customers across Africa in just over a year. We've unlocked $2+ billion in credit for people the traditional financial system ignored. We're a certified B Corporation on track to reach 10 million customers—and we're building the financial infrastructure to get there.
Your role? Ensure every transaction is captured accurately as we scale one of Africa's fastest-growing fintech companies. This isn't just processing numbers in isolation. It's financial accounting that enables confident business decisions while serving customers accessing financial products for the first time.
What Makes This DifferentYour current role: Process transactions for one entity. Reconcile because it's required.
Prepare audit schedules when asked.
This role: Work across M-KOPA's South African operations with exposure to our pan-African structure. Your reconciliations inform cash flow decisions for 35,000 agents. Your tax compliance supports a company contributing $45 million in taxes. Your balance sheet work underpins decisions that help thousands access their first smartphone or e-motorbike.
You'll partner directly with the Senior Finance Manager where your technical skills are respected and your insights shape decisions—not just schedules.
What You'll Do
Own the full financial accounting cycle: Record transactions under IFRS, prepare month-end journals and accruals, maintain balance sheet reconciliations for banks, creditors, debtors, and intercompany accounts. Support daily cash management and payment processing. Prepare weekly cash flow forecasts that inform real business decisions.
Maintain fixed asset registers for infrastructure supporting 2 million smartphones assembled in Kenya. Support tax compliance across corporate income tax, VAT, and statutory returns. Prepare audit schedules for annual and interim audits. Identify process improvements and control enhancements as we scale.
You're Ready If You Have
Completed articles through SAIPA, SAICA, CIMA, or ACCA with demonstrable post-qualification experience in financial or management accounting
Strong technical foundation in IFRS and South African VAT with hands-on experience in financial reporting, reconciliations, and statutory compliance
Proficiency with accounting systems like Sage, SAP, Xero, or Dynamics and advanced Excel skills that turn data into insights.
The Reality
This is demanding work. Month-ends are intense. Growth creates complexity. You'll need to work independently, prioritize ruthlessly, and maintain accuracy when things move fast.
But if you want accounting work where your technical skills support financial inclusion rather than just financial reporting—where 86% customer satisfaction is built on the financial foundations you help maintain—this is exactly that opportunity.
Ready to make your articles count for something bigger? Let's talk.
Why M-KOPA?At M-KOPA, we empower our people to own their careers through diverse development programs, coaching partnerships, and on-the-job training. We support individual journeys with family-friendly policies, prioritize well-being, and embrace flexibility.
