The Role
We're seeking a Lead Developer who operates at the intersection of deep technical expertise, strategic thinking, and genuine people leadership. This is a pivotal in-office role at Canal Walk where you'll shape technical direction, mentor developers at all levels, and serve as a bridge between architecture, development, and client needs. You'll be pushing the boundaries of AI-augmented development while ensuring the human element remains central to everything we build.
What You'll Do
- Lead complex, multi-team initiatives across Full Stack's diverse client portfolio
- Collaborate closely with architects and product owners to shape technical strategy and specification design
- Mentor and coach senior and intermediate developers, fostering a culture of technical excellence and continuous learning
- Serve as primary technical contact for key client relationships, translating between business objectives and technical execution
- Champion the integration of AI technologies throughout our development practice—from code generation to automated testing to documentation
- Ensure rigorous adherence to quality standards while maintaining delivery velocity
- Contribute to Full Stack's internal technical strategy, tool selection, and methodology evolution
- Lead by example in maintaining focus on user experience and human factors across the entire SDLC
- Participate in pre-sales activities, providing technical insight during proposal development
What We Need From You
- 10+ years of professional software development experience with substantial time in technical leadership roles
- Proven ability to lead teams through complex technical challenges while maintaining code quality and delivery timelines
- Strong architectural thinking with hands-on coding skills—you still commit code regularly
- Deep expertise across multiple domains: web, mobile, desktop, data systems, and ideally machine learning
- Mastery of AI development tools with a vision for how AI transforms software engineering practices
- Exceptional written and spoken English—you'll author specifications, present to C-level stakeholders, and represent Full Stack's technical capabilities to prospective clients
- Genuinely outgoing and relationship-focused—you energise teams, build trust with clients, and create environments where people do their best work
- Profound understanding that software exists to serve humans—you think deeply about usability, accessibility, and the broader impact of technical decisions
- Commitment to in-office collaboration at Canal Walk (leadership presence matters)
What Distinguishes You
- Experience across multiple industries (financial services, logistics, retail, ESG, etc.)
- Background in subscription-based development models or consultancy environments
- Track record of successful client relationship management and account growth
- Contributions to technical thought leadership (conference speaking, writing, community building)
- Experience with Azure, large-scale data platforms, or ESG/GHG reporting systems
