Core Responsibilities

  • Patient Monitoring
  • Observe vital signs (pulse, temperature, respiratory rate, oxygen saturation).
  • Report changes in breathing effort, color, consciousness, or distress.
  • Watch for early signs of infection, especially around tracheostomy or ventilator tubing.
  • Ventilator & Airway Support (under RN guidance)
  • Check ventilator alarms and respond appropriately (never ignoring alarms).
  • Ensure tubing is correctly connected, not kinked, and secured.
  • Assist with suctioning (if within scope and trained).
  • Keep emergency equipment (Ambu bag/manual resuscitator, spare tracheostomy tube, suction machine) at bedside.
  • Daily Care
  • Provide tracheostomy care (as trained and permitted).
  • Maintain oral and general hygiene to reduce infection risk.
  • Assist with repositioning to prevent pressure sores.
  • Support feeding, hydration, and elimination needs (PEG tube, catheter, etc., if applicable).
  • Infection Control
  • Practice strict hand hygiene before and after care.
  • Clean and change ventilator tubing, humidifier chambers, and suction catheters according to protocol.
  • Keep the home environment sterile around the ventilator.
  • Documentation & Communication
  • Record observations, suctioning episodes, ventilator checks, and patient's condition.
  • Report promptly to RN or physician if there are changes or complications.
  • Communicate with family/caregivers about daily progress.
  • Emergency Preparedness
  • Know how to disconnect and use a manual resuscitation bag if the ventilator fails.
  • Recognize and respond quickly to signs of distress (blocked tracheostomy, low oxygen, equipment failure).
  • Call emergency services if required.
