The Role

The Population Health Sciences Institute is seeking a highly motivated Research Associate in Health Economics with strong quantitative skills to take up a significant role in the delivery of health outcome valuation (Discrete Choice Experiments) and Economic Evaluation studies.  

Your role will be to develop and undertake Discrete Choice Experiments and Economic Evaluations as part of multiple research projects. You will be involved in the development of funding proposals, analysis plans, ethics applications, and the design, conduct and analysis of DCEs and economic evaluations.

This role offers an exciting opportunity to join a dynamic and thriving research team. The successful candidate will have a strong research profile. You will need to be highly motivated, with strong quantitative skills. You should have a PhD or equivalent experience. You will have experience in designing and conducting economic evaluations and designing and conducting outcome valuation studies and a track record of collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.

This is a Full Time, Fixed Term until 30th June 2028 (with expectation of extending)

Key Accountabilities

Conduct work related to the methodological development, design, conduct and analysis of economic evaluations and outcome valuation studies (DCEs)Carry out research within agreed timelines, meeting project milestones and to an appropriate standardPresent information on research progress and outcomes to a Principal Investigator or groups overseeing the research projectMaintain academic standards and freedom, and work in accordance with university policies (e.g. equal opportunities, health and safety policies)Collect and organise data; ensure that research activity and data is consistent with current research governance instructions and Data Protection legislation; ensure that research activity and data collection and management meet the demands of new instructions and legislation as these come into effect and keep appropriate recordsPrepare papers for publication and disseminate findings at conferences as requiredInvolvement with support from senior team members in writing grant application bidsSupport teaching relating to Health Economics on the Institute and Faculty of Medical Science postgraduate and undergraduate courses as requiredIdentify and undertake a programme of professional development, including further training in research methods and other transferable skillsTo contribute to the activities of the Health Economics Group at Newcastle UniversityCarry out administrative tasks and other duties to support the Population Health Sciences Institute as required by the Dean

The Person (Essential)

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Experience of conducting research involving the design, delivery and analysis of economic evaluation and outcome valuation studies Effective time management and prioritisation skills to balance potential conflicting demands and the ability to meet deadlinesAbility to undertake work independently and as part of the research project teamExcellent organisational, communication and interpersonal skillsAbility to work flexibly and cooperatively with others to successfully deliver research projectsAbility to maintain confidentiality and protect research/personal data according to protocols and principles of good research practiceAbility to prepare reports and papers for presentation at national and international conferences and meetingsEvidence of ability to write for high quality peer reviewed publications with a publication record at a national levelEvidence of skills in using relevant statistical packages (such as STATA, R)Experience of research on methodological aspects of economic evaluation and outcome valuation (Desirable)Experience of supervising less experienced staff and postgraduate students (Desirable)Teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate level in an academic setting (Desirable)

Qualifications 

Formal postgraduate qualification in a relevant disciplinePhD in Health Economics, Statistics, Epidemiology or Evidence Synthesis or a closely related quantitative subject or equivalent experience to specifically include advanced economic evaluation and health outcome valuation experience
