Purpose Summary

We are seeking an experienced
SHE Manager
to oversee and drive the implementation of
Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality (SHEQ)
programmes in compliance with legal and company requirements. The incumbent will lead SHE strategy execution, risk management frameworks, environmental licensing (IWULA & EMPR), and ESG reporting for our operations in
Kathu, Northern Cape
. The ideal candidate will ensure full compliance with occupational health and safety regulations while fostering a culture of safety and environmental responsibility across all departments and contractor interfaces.

Key Responsibilities

1.
SHE Strategy & Planning

  • Define the strategic SHE direction aligned to business goals and legal requirements.
  • Develop and implement a 3-year strategic SHE action plan and associated budgets.
  • Manage and apply for environmental licenses and permits (IWULA & EMPR).
  • Align operational teams to SHE targets and drive integration with other functions.

2.
Integrated Risk Management

  • Develop and implement a site-wide risk management framework and tools (e.g., bowtie analysis).
  • Identify and mitigate priority unwanted events and associated risks.
  • Oversee risk control strategy development and implementation.
  • Manage change processes and risk control verification mechanisms.

3.
SHE Management System

  • Lead the design, implementation, and maintenance of the SHE Management System.
  • Oversee audits, incident investigations, system reviews, and continuous improvement.
  • Identify training needs, licensing requirements, and implement SHE awareness programmes.
  • Ensure alignment with ISO standards and relevant regulatory requirements.

Business Partner/Contractor Management

  • Implement a robust business partner management system to address SHE risks in outsourced activities.
  • Oversee all stages of contractor management:
  • Contracting strategy
  • Scope development
  • Pre-qualification & selection
  • Onboarding
  • Supervision & performance
  • Close-out and verification
  • Ensure legal compliance and safe execution of all contracted work.

5.
Culture Transformation & Leadership

  • Champion SHE culture transformation and promote proactive employee engagement.
  • Drive participation in VFLs, inspections, SHE meetings, and cultural KPIs.
  • Embed safety culture principles across departments and business partners.

6.
Employee Wellness & Health Management

  • Oversee on-site clinic and employee wellness initiatives.
  • Manage medical surveillance, fatigue, substance abuse programmes, and health risk assessments.
  • Promote health awareness campaigns and peer educator systems.

7.
Hygiene & Environmental Health

  • Lead hygiene management strategies and risk assessments.
  • Link hygiene monitoring with medical surveillance to assess and improve control measures.
  • Ensure hygiene controls are visual and easily auditable.

8.
Quality Management

  • Enhance and maintain the SHEQ Management System and documentation.
  • Conduct SHEQ system audits and enforce continuous improvements.
  • Ensure SHE policies and procedures are effectively rolled out and followed.

9.
Financial Management

  • Develop and manage departmental budgets aligned to LOM & MTP plans.
  • Monitor and control SHE-related costs and financial risks.
  • Ensure compliance with financial policies and protect company assets.

10.
Technology & ESG Reporting

  • Leverage technology to digitise SHE data and improve monitoring systems.
  • Lead ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) data collection and reporting.

Qualifications & Experience

Minimum Requirements:

  • Tertiary qualification
    : Degree or Diploma in
    Environmental Science, Safety Management, Engineering
    , or related discipline.
  • Certifications
    in Occupational Health & Safety (e.g., SAMTRAC, NEBOSH, ISO 14001/45001).
  • 3–5 years' experience
    in a SHE Manager or similar role, preferably in
    mining, construction, or heavy industry
    .
  • In-depth knowledge of
    South African environmental legislation
    ,
    IWULA & EMPR
    , and occupational health and safety laws.
  • Proven experience in
    risk management
    ,
    incident investigation
    ,
    contractor SHE management
    , and
    ESG reporting
    .
