This Head of Card Payments position can be based in Cape Town or Johannesburg.

THE ROLE
As the Head of Card Payments, you will lead, scale and mature the card business for a leading FinTech. You will be responsible for defining the commercial strategy, guide the roadmap, manage key industry relationships and ensure the division delivers consistent growth. This includes bringing in and building trusted partnerships with Visa, Mastercard and other acquiring partners. While working closely with Product, Engineering, Risk and Compliance to deliver a secure and reliable card experience.
This is an opportunity to scale the card business that has strong early traction. You will shape the operating model, define the long term direction of the division and build a high performing team that supports the demands of growth. This is not a legacy environment. You will determine which capabilities are built internally and how the team evolves as volumes increase.
When you identify gaps in routing, authorisation behaviour, fraud patterns or scheme performance, you will have the support to implement improvements quickly. This gives you the freedom to grow and scale the card business at a pace not possible within traditional banking structures.
Leadership
- Own the card acquiring strategy, lead and develop a high-performing team, and represent the business at executive and industry level.
Strategy
- Define the roadmap, build strong relationships with banks, schemes and processors, and ensure the business meets growth targets and remains compliant with regulatory and scheme requirements.
Revenue and Commercial Performance
- Drive merchant growth, optimise pricing and commercial structures, and use market and competitor insights to inform decisions.
Operational Excellence
- Oversee operational performance, ensure processing reliability and scalability, strengthen risk and fraud controls, and champion continuous improvement.
Compliance and Governance
- Ensure full compliance with SARB, scheme rules and PCI DSS. Maintain strong AML and fraud frameworks, monitor regulatory changes and work with internal teams to ensure governance and audit readiness.
THE REQUIREMENTS
A minimum of 10 years' experience in card payments with strong exposure to card acquiring, issuing or scheme-level engagement
Established senior relationships at Visa, Mastercard and major South African acquirers
Experience negotiating acquiring agreements, scheme conversations and enterprise merchant pricing
Strong understanding of interchange, scheme fees, MDR, routing logic and cost of acceptance
Expert knowledge of authorisation flows, issuer behaviour, fraud models, chargebacks, PCI and tokenisation
Experience improving approval rates through data analysis, BIN routing, 3DS optimisation and issuer engagement
Leadership experience building and guiding product, commercial or operations teams
Ability to work closely with engineering and product teams on certification, platform enhancements and routing improvements
