Role Overview

The Sales & Marketing Head will lead the end-to-end commercial strategy for us in South Africa. This role is responsible for driving revenue growth, expanding market share, leading modern trade and general trade operations, developing localized marketing strategies, strengthening distributor networks, and ensuring profitable P&L management. The position requires a seasoned FMCG leader with strong expertise in sales execution, brand building, and channel development within the African market (preferred) or similar emerging markets.

Key Responsibilities

A. Sales Leadership & Revenue Growth

  • Drive annual sales targets and deliver consistent revenue growth across all product categories.
  • Develop and execute the sales strategy for South Africa covering modern trade, general trade, pharmacy channel, and wholesale.
  • Set monthly, quarterly, and annual sales budgets; monitor and review performance regularly.
  • Strengthen relationships with key accounts, top retailers, distributors, and strategic partners.
  • Identify new market opportunities and develop expansion plans for underserved regions.

B. Distribution & Channel Management

  • Manage end-to-end distributor operations, including selection, onboarding, performance monitoring, and profitability.
  • Optimize route-to-market (RTM) and ensure maximum outlet penetration.
  • Drive visibility, merchandising standards, and planogram compliance across retail channels.
  • Lead negotiations with modern trade chains (e.g., Shoprite, Spar, Pick n Pay) for listings, visibility programs, and trade promotions.

C. Marketing & Brand Management

  • Develop localized brand and marketing strategies aligned with company's global brand guidelines.
  • Lead ATL, BTL, digital, influencer marketing, and retail activation programs to improve brand equity and consumer engagement.
  • Conduct consumer research, market trend analysis, and competitor benchmarking to drive brand positioning.
  • Manage marketing agencies for creatives, media, and on-ground execution.

D. Business Planning & P&L Management

  • Own the P&L for the South Africa business including budgeting, forecasting, and pricing decisions.
  • Optimize cost structures, trade spends, and marketing investments for maximum ROI.
  • Monitor stock planning, inventory levels, and supply chain coordination to avoid gaps or overstocking.

E. Leadership & Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Lead a high-performing sales and marketing team; provide coaching, KPIs, and performance evaluations.
  • Work closely with global/regional teams on product launches, pricing strategies, and marketing campaigns.
  • Ensure regulatory compliance across product claims, labeling, and advertising.

Qualifications & Experience

  • MBA or Master's degree in Marketing, Sales, Business Administration, or related field.
  • 12+ years of FMCG experience with strong exposure to sales management, channel development, and brand marketing.
  • Proven success in leading large teams and managing P&L responsibilities.
  • Experience working in African markets preferred; global or emerging markets experience beneficial.
  • Strong negotiation, analytical, and business planning skills.
  • Deep understanding of modern trade dynamics, distributor management, and category management.
