- Identifies relevant McDonald’s business drivers for given product category.
- Assesses the industry and the product type, including demand from consumers, competitor review, supplier capabilities, capacities & competencies, in relation to McDonald’s future demand for that product type.
- Identifies key competencies that need to developed for, or added to, the product supplier base.
- Works directly with suppliers to ensure the necessary supplier infrastructure is in place to execute the product plan.
- Responsible for selecting and approval for local and overseas suppliers who will satisfy McDonald’s quality standards.
- Evaluates, analyses and negotiates with suppliers to achieve most competitive prices for bakery, dairy, meat and other food items.
- Has responsibility for the operation of the Distribution Center (DC) to provide lowest cost, best quality and consistently high-level service to all McDonald’s restaurants.
- Utilizes Perseco logistics and packaging expertise to purchase the most cost effective food and packaging items with the McDonald’s system of approval suppliers.
- Provides direction and is responsible for implementing McDonald’s quality program with the distribution center (DC) and suppliers.
- Co-ordinates with McDonald’s South Africa Purchasing Group and/or McDonald’s South Africa Development Company on sourcing and approval of new local or regional suppliers.
- Demonstrates a genuine understanding and need for internal and external parties to comply with the highest McDonald’s standards and is passionate about reinforcing them at every opportunity.
- **Product Development**_
- Understands and interprets the marketing brief. Identifies the best supplier to deliver the product specification with the budget.
- Agrees quantities, timescales and price indications with suppliers.
- Provides suppliers with product schedule and delivery timeline.
- Coordinates with Quality Assurance to ensure that supplier meets McDonald’s quality standards.
- Provides timely and accurate feedback into the cross functional working group on new product development activities.
- **Relationship Management**_
- Manage the business relationship with the suppliers involved in the supply chain category.
- Provides support to Marketing Department on sourcing, production, storage, and distribution of promotional material and marketing related materials.
- Develops and coaches subordinates, developing them for future opportunities within the system.
- Builds strong relationships and fosters teamwork among department, agencies, suppliers and staff to achieve maximum performance.
- Maintains open communication channels between Operations Departments, Marketing Department, New Business Development Department and other relevant departments to ensure operations targets are met.
- Cultivates and promotes working relationships within McDonald’s and with senior-level counterparts in other corporations and outside professional organization to gain and share knowledge (e.g. best practices).
- Partner with internal and external customers by establishing and building open lines of communication.
- Fully understands and is able to share relevant internal and external parties McDonald’s codes of good practice in the area of purchasing e.g. Social Welfare Policy, Sustainability Policy, Animal Welfare Policy.
- Encourages McDonald’s suppliers to support the brand and the McDonald’s charities through relationship building and communication.
- **Financial Management**_
- Determines pricing protocol for products/suppliers based on market reviews, competitor positions, supplier financials, etc.
- Fully understands supplier cost structures and logistics costs. Is able to identify value added opportunities for McDonald’s as appropriate.
- Provides monthly updates to relevant parties on key costs and expenses related to purchasing.
- Has a good understanding of current trends in pricing and is able to forecast accurate food and paper cost and recommend appropriate actions when trends are adverse.
- Supports finance when there are appropriate for hedging through accurate forecasting and coordination of information.
- Identifies opportunities for cost savings, supplier reviews and profitability improvement during the 3-1-Q process.
- Assists in the sale of premium items to other countries at best price. Coordinates the transfer and payment for items.
- **Crisis Managemen**t _
- Identifies ways to manage a crisis without compromising food safety and food quality.
- Ensures that supply to the restaurants is assured.
- Coordinates with QA and Marketing to identify most appropriate course of action and find alternative suppliers.
- Develops contingency plans, including supplier and source alternatives, to effectively manage crisis situations.
- Understands the crisis management communication process as it affects purchasing.
