Position/Title: Lead Brewer
Reports Too: Head Brewer
Function: Brewing
Area: South Africa

Overall Responsibility:

- The Lead Brewers is fully responsible for execution of the production according to the production schedule.
- Must co-ordinate and manage all lab activities.
- Preparing beers for packaging and ensure specifications are met.
- Quality management and record keeping of all brewing related aspects.
- Manage raw material and chemical inventory.
- Maintain very strict hygiene within the brewery.
- Staff control and management and delegate to various staff members.
- Responsible for equipment maintenance along with the maintenance team.

Focus Area 1- Lead Brewer
- Fully responsible for production according to the brew schedule.
- Must be able to brew all beer styles unassisted along with a full understanding of all brewing aspects.
- Yeast management and lab work.
- Manage and reduce losses.
- Preparing beers for packaging.
- Look at ways to improve and innovate within the brewing space.
- Planning and purchasing chemicals and raw materials management.
- Must control the sanitary aspects of brewery, grain room and grain storage.
- Staff control and management.
- Respect all equipment and maintain it in good running order along with maintenance.

Focus Area 2 - Quality Management
- Highly focused on quality management and record keeping of all brewing related aspects.
- Coordinate the tasting panel for strict adherence to the sensory aspects of the brands.

Focus Area 3 - Leadership, People Management and Development
- Support and entrench the company culture that emphasizes quality, continuous improvement, key employee retention and development, and high performance.
- Inspire and motivate the broader SHP team (not just your direct reports) to deliver on goals and maximize individual and the overall company performance.
- Provide overside and direction to your team.
- Recruit, development and performance management of your direct reports.

Requirements of the Role:

- Tertiary education in Microbiology or Chemistry
- An advanced understanding of all aspects of brewing including cellaring, yeast handling, CIP, and sanitization.
- 2-3 years brewing experience.
- Valid driver’s license/own transport.

Preferred Skills/Competencies
- Strong organizational habits, a self-motivated work ethic, and good critical thinking/problem solving skills.
- Must have the schedule availability to work long and/or odd hours as needed to complete tasks and maintain the brewing operations.
- Flexibility in terms of hours and a willingness to work night shifts, weekends, and overtime.
- Computer literate with an understanding of Microsoft Office/spreadsheet programs
- Ability to work as part of a team.
- Ability to multi-task
