**About the Job**:
Our client provides an opportunity for a Monitoring Reporting and Verification expert. The incumbent will work with Climate Services research group of Holistic Climate Change Impact Area, within the Smart Places cluster. The incumbent will be responsible for the provision of technical support in the implementation of restoration of landscape in South Africa (ReLISA) project. The expert will research and focus on Greenhouse gas (GHG) inventory. The position is meant to provide technical support through interaction with the client's researchers, and consortium partners, on methodological design and development (qualitative and quantitative) for the greenhouse gas (GHG) measurement, monitoring and verification (MRV) to innovate and contribute to the development of methodologies and tools consistent with requirements of the carbon markets.
**The Consultant’s key responsibilities**:
- To support the design and development of nature-based methodologies to reflect the latest science and ensure compliance with international frameworks and best practices.
- To support critical thinking and innovative approaches, new analyses, and new analytical methods for GHG emissions from land use.
- To support the development of methodologies for quantification, analysis, and communication of greenhouse gas emissions from lands under diverse use and management to ensure timely production of high-quality deliverables.
- To perform calculations of GHG emission reductions using GHG activity data.
- To develop and implement statistically sound approaches to project design and data analysis for carbon projects, including use of field data, new statistical tools, and models.
- To support the development of guidance and training materials related to carbon accounting (using methods and internationally accepted best practices).
- To design templates for decision-support tools for the measurement and monitoring of GHG emissions and ecosystem services in the land use and forestry sectors.
- Develop a training/capacity development strategy.
**Requirements**:
- Knowledge of environmental sustainability opportunities and challenges in national and multinational companies.
- Sound knowledge of GHG accounting methodologies and standards (e.g. GHG Protocol), including sound knowledge of Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions.
- Ability to conduct research tasks, collect, analyse and summarise data; combined with ability to manage projects in a multi-stakeholder and multi-geographies context
- Good writing skills, with the ability to create high-quality written documents (e.g. proposals and deliverables) combined with excellent oral communication skills in English.
- Ability to collaborate with key international, national and sub-national actors in the implementation of climate mitigation initiatives and supporting innovation in emerging climate change mitigation pathways.
- Ability to lead the preparation and completion of proposals and deliverables for corporate and public sector clients on climate change policies and climate change mitigation.
- Ability to liaise with other teams within and outside the client to gather information and insights related to climate policy and climate change mitigation
**Qualifications, skills, and experience**
- Master’s Degree (or bachelor’s with significant experience) in physical sciences, engineering, or related field with at least **Ten years’ experience** in these fields and a doctoral degree would be an added advantage.
- Excellent knowledge of carbon markets, leading accreditations (e.g., ICVCM, CORSIA, ICROA), Standards (e.g., VCS, Gold Standard), and ARR, REDD+ methodologies.
- Experience with preparing submissions or reporting against key climate corporate leadership standards (e.g., GHG Protocol, Science-Based Targets Initiative’s standards).
- Strong knowledge of carbon markets, including CDM mechanisms, voluntary standards, and Paris Agreement frameworks.
- Experience of certification or third-party auditing systems and in-depth knowledge of how they are managed, carbon project development or carbon/sustainability standards.
- Understanding of carbon accounting frameworks of IPCC and GHG Protocol.
- Knowledge of greenhouse gas profiles, land use change models, and potential adaptation and mitigation strategies in the land use sector.
- Demonstrated experience in research and public communication on technical issues.
- Ability to communicate complex issues both verbally and in written form.
- At least 3+ years of experience of working in cross-functional teams and contributing to complex, multi-stakeholder projects.
- **Required Travel**: Domestic travel is required for 2-3 trips to the field sites during the contract period.
- Good interpersonal skills and the ability to work closely with others in research group.
- Must have a valid driver’s licence.
