Capability Managers are responsible for the generation of knowledge and systems to assess and report on biodiversity and ecosystems in the Western Cape, and to enable the implementation of Strategic Adaptive Management Models through the development of plans, systems, and strategies for the conservation of biodiversity in the Western Cape. Capability Managers lead teams that include capability specialists, ecologists, technical and support staff and facilitates strategic direction, implementation, and reporting. Capability Managers are responsible and accountable for strategic, functional, human resource, financial and assets management functions and will report to the Executive Director: Biodiversity Capabilities.
The Capability Manager**:Integrated Catchments** leads and guides the development and implementation of integrated catchment management strategies to inform, develop and report on the response to disasters and fires, the prioritization and response to the alien invasive species, restoration of priority biodiversity and ecosystems for the maintenance of ecological resilience in priority ecosystems in the Western Cape.
**RESPONSIBILITIES**:
- Manage and enable the development and integration of Integrated Catchment Capability knowledge, planning and monitoring systems
- Manage the plan of work to develop five-yearly Catchment to Coast Strategies, manage contributions to the development of five-yearly Western Cape Biodiversity Spatial Plans and Western Cape State of Biodiversity Reports.
- Manage contributions to annual Western Cape State of Conservation Reports.
- Manage scientific and technical contributions for the development and implementation of management plans, strategies, and frameworks for biodiversity conservation outcomes.
- Manage, develop, and integrate effective Integrated Catchment conservation policies, strategies, and systems.
- Lead, contribute to and collaborate on the review and development of national and provincial biodiversity and conservation management policies and practices aligned with national legislation, policies, guidelines, and multilateral environmental agreements.
- Generate impact through the enablement, development and integration of technologies, practices, policy, science, and innovation
- Manage and lead a team of scientific and technical specialists to produce scientific and technical publications, presentations, and reports
- Lead and contribute to the production of leading edge scientific and technical publications that impact at a national and provincial level.
- Participate at provincial, national, and international biodiversity conservation conferences.
- Manage and report on biodiversity conservation mainstreaming products and the uptake of mainstreaming interventions developed for specific stakeholder groups.
- Lead, engage and collaborate in strategic Integrated Catchment partnerships.
- Lead and contribute to the implementation of natural disaster management response.
- Manage and represent CapeNature’s mandate and interests on National and Provincial Forums.
- Establish, maintain, and report on formal and informal strategic partnerships and collaborations.
- Manage, guide, and facilitate the development of appropriate external funding proposals.
- Lead, develop and deploy Integrated Catchment capability and capacity.
- Manage the implementation of internal capacity building programs to develop lateral competencies for integrated catchments, including fires, disaster, freshwater ecosystem, and ecological restoration.
- Manage and maintain appropriate technological capability and integrate applied biodiversity conservation technology and innovation.
- Manage the implementation of environmental capacity building and environmental awareness interventions for external stakeholders.
- Manage the development of knowledge products, Standard Operating Guidelines and Standard Operating Procedures.

**MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS**:
**Qualifications and Experience**
- A post graduate qualification (NQF 8 or higher) in Natural/Biological Sciences.
- A minimum of 5 years’ middle management experience in the biodiversity/conservation sector. Senior management experience in the formal conservation sector will be advantageous.
