**Head of Maintenance**

**Reports To**:
The Head of Maintenance is pegged at Senior Management level and will report to the Operations Director

**People who report to the Head Maintenance**:
The following departments report to the Head Maintenance.
- Mechanical (which includes a Foreman, Boilermakers, Welders, Fitters and Assistants),
- Electrical (which includes a Foreman, Electricians, Handyman and Assistants),
- Diesel workshop,
- Maintenance Planning and stores.

**Overview**:
The job looks after the maintenance and upkeep of Company. This covers daily maintenance issues, project work, development work, breakdown repair, shutdown planning and control. The role also includes working to stay on budget, coordinating and fitting in with terminal operations, maintaining discipline and ensuring that the departments are adequately resourced.

**KRA's**:
**Budgets**
- Compiles short, medium and long term budgets for the maintenance department.
- Oversee, review, present and monitor departmental budgets and assist each department to keep to those budgets.
- Scrutinize the monthly operating costs and perform checks where necessary. Investigate costs and make recommendations to senior management on issues such as own or lease.
- Annual reviews of the maintenance stores and equipment to check on the stockholding, condition and appropriateness. Make corrections where necessary.

**Design function**
- Analyze the maintenance planning system and modify where necessary to be able to run a simple yet effective planned maintenance system.
- Investigate, identify the real problems and design better ways of repairing the fault.
- Interact with consulting engineers to ensure that new designs are comprehensive, justified and cost effective.

**Adherence to safety programs.**
- Attends, updates and reports on Safety matters at centralized meetings.
- Ensures appropriate PPE standards are maintained.
- Ensures that alarms, sirens, claxons and other warning devices adhere to legislation.
- Ensures that appropriate fire protection equipment is installed in substations, motor control centers and file server rooms.
- Ensures that proper and effective hand rails, machine guarding, electrical equipment, high pressure hydraulic equipment and compressed air systems are safe at all times.

**Control of staff**
- Ensures the members of the team are properly recruited, trained and fully functioning.
- Controls the maintenance team’s leave, availability over busy periods and plans audits with internal and external auditors.
- Ensures that the department always has sufficient resources to operate (even during load shedding).
- Ensures that the maintenance department is always running the most relevant system and that all staff are properly trained.

**Maintenance standards**
- Ensures that the quality of workmanship remains at the highest possible leveIs.
- Perform checks on completed work to ensure that the correct work was done and at the best possible quality. Poor performance must be rejected.
- Control on site contractors to ensure they perform quality workmanship.
- Ensure drawings are updated and kept on file

**Maintenance Planning**
- Prepare monthly, quarterly and annual maintenance plans
- Prepare shutdowns which include procurement of spares, contractors, equipment, cranes and keep track of progress.
- Implement and maintain a simple but effective maintenance planning and recording system.

**Breakdown Maintenance**
- Be responsible for planning of standby and maintaining continuity of artisans on shifts and callouts.
- Assist with breakdowns where necessary.
- Be present to coordinate major problems or to assist Operations to find alternative solutions

**Team leadership**
- Display outstanding values, culture and team leadership (including employee engagement and development)

- Perform disciplinary enquiries when necessary.

**QUALIFICATIONS, SKILL AND EXPERIENCE**
- Competent Person as defined by the General Machinery Regulations.
- Government Engineers Certificate of Competency in Electrical/Mechanical.
- Minimum of 10 years’ relevant experience in a large industrial environment.
- Electrical heavy and light current installation and maintenance is essential.
- Prior Mechanical handling industry experience will be a distinct advantage.
- Experience in PLC programmes, SCADA systems and automation.
- Excellent computer skills including spreadsheet manipulation and report writing.
- Ability to fault find at pace and to teach others how to minimize delays due to breakdowns.
- Excellent people management skills in facilitation as well as leadership roles
- Must maintain Professional accreditation status, membership of recognized bodies and keep up to date with advances in technology.
