Assistant Accountant

**Purpose of the Job**:
The purpose of the Assistant Accountant role includes general ledger maintenance; execution and enforcement of internal financial controls; assistance with accounting up to trail balance; month-end reporting and unqualified audit reports. The role supports process efficiency and improvement through the effective reconciliation of accounts, creation and submission of billing and invoices, preparation of financial data, statements and reports and maintenance of financial documentation and records.
The role requires a meticulous individual with well-developed organisational skills and the ability to provide excellent financial administrative support to ensure commercial targets are met.
**Job Objectives**:
- Complete the entire accounting process up to trial balance.
- Reports on financial results (monthly, quarterly and annually).
- Facilitate annual budget process and compile final budget.
- Provide support / information to external auditors.
- Prepare financial statements and tax calculations.
- Process Shoprite statements (Head Office).
- Create and process SAP/BPC journals.
- Reconciled GL accounts and accurately complete trial balance.
- Update and maintain all related financial data, records and files as per company policies ensuring accuracy and integrity of information is maintained.
- Perform regular audits at appropriate intervals.
- Investigate and rectify any performace deviations.
- Document exceptions and escalate promptly with a corrective action plan.
- Manage cross functional interfaces / relationships.
- Resolve escalated operational issues
- Develop, motivate and discipline team.
**Qualifications**:

- Degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related field
**Desirable**
- Completed accounting articles
**Experience**:
**Essential**
- 2+ years' experience in a similar capacity or role, processing and executing financial administrative, reconciliation and reporting activities in a corporate or retail environment.
**Desirable**
- Managerial experience
**Knowledge and Skills**:
- Well-developed knowledge and understanding of financial and accounting concepts and principles.
- Proficiency in MS Office 365 with intermediate Excel skills to prepare detailed spreadsheets using formulas.
- Ability to work as part of a team and take direction accurately.
- Analytical thinker and problem solver.
- High level of accuracy.
- Trustworthy and discreet when dealing with confidential information.
- Strong organizational and time management skills.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
