Assistant Technical Officer

Duties/Pligte
- Designing, setting up, executing and administrating sensory aspects of research and industry-related projects, including support with the ethical clearance process;
- Providing support during undergraduate practicals and wine tastings;
- Maintaining undergraduate practical laboratory equipment and stocks;
- Maintaining the sensory laboratory administration, running computerised facilities and software packages and keeping data backups of the sensory laboratory;
- Maintaining and writing standard operating procedures;
- Recruiting, training and administration of, as well as ongoing liaising with, tasting panels;
- Supporting experimental cellar personnel with routine analysis and winemaking tasks.
Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes
- A BScAgric in Oenology or Food Science, BSc Hons in Wine Biotechnology, OR BTech in Food Technology or related field with two years' relevant work experience;
- Experience in panel leading and performing sensory evaluations;
- Well-developed taste and smell competencies, preferably with regard to wine evaluation;
- Proven ability to plan, organise and prioritise independently and efficiently;
- Good written and verbal communication skills in at least English;
- Computer proficiency pertaining to MS Word, MS Excel, Outlook and Teams;
- The ability to work in a team.
Recommendation/Aanbeveling
- Experience in the setting up and running of sensory evaluation experiments and projects using specialised software packages, preferably Compusense;
- Experience in basic sensory data management, statistical analysis and visualisation;
- Experience in wine tastings and wine fault identification;
- General knowledge of the South African grape and wine industry.
