AMAKA is a digital media platform connecting a global community of women sharing Pan-African stories.
With few platforms solely dedicated to capturing authentic stories from the continent, AMAKA aims to fill the gap by adopting a digital-first, multidisciplinary and cross-cultural approach to content creation, storytelling, and editorial production, offering our audience purposeful and insightful stories that represent various African and Afro-diasporic female communities. We serve the vision and voice of the modern African woman.
About You
You will be leading and executing user research for our memberships platform, using the insights and data to develop a membership and community-building strategy for the platform. You will be responsible for managing the growth and development of the membership strategy.
Location: London-based, Cape-Town Based or Lagos Based
Key Responsibilities
User Research
- Lead and execute user research studies, assigning research goals, assumptions and tests to adhere to research objectives
- Define, conduct and drive the creation of a market research roadmap to elicit quantitative and qualitative evidence for new product offerings and opportunities.
- Conduct secondary market research to support the development and creation of AMAKA’s membership and community-building strategies
- Conduct insights panels and focus groups seeking user feedback to develop AMAKA’s product roadmap.
- Work with our Senior product manager to create user profiles to refine and update our product features.
- Conduct research reports and white papers to highlight and present findings.
- Gather data to optimise existing digital products for users
- Support the creation, testing and refinement of membership campaigns, ensuring key metrics are obtained to measure success.
- Understand and identify user dissatisfaction, the drivers and how we can solve these issues to improve our offering long term.
Memberships Strategy Development & Reporting
- Develop a membership and community growth strategy for the AMAKA platform
- Work with our Marketing Director and Editorial team to identify appropriate partners and content creators to increase the visibility and growth of the membership platform.
- Assess membership and community performance on a monthly and quarterly basis
- Work with our Marketing Director to design, develop and implement a membership marketing strategy.
- Work with our senior Editorial team to design, develop and implement an editorial strategy for the membership platform.
- Work with our digital marketing team to design, and implement an acquisition, retention and growth strategy for the membership platform.
- Ensure our membership platform is highlighted across each touch point of the AMAKA universe and products.

Membership Management and Community Engagement
- Post and Manage regular membership and community offerings and updates to increase engagement and generate membership signs and conversions.
- Outreach and onboarding of initial platform users.
- Manage the membership budget, ensuring resources are used effectively and deliver return on investment.
- At least six years of experience working in a consumer tech product and/or insights and research-related role.
- Proven background in web analytics and measuring user behaviour, working for businesses with multiple user touchpoints and dealing with a high volume of data from various sources.
- Proven track record of building and scaling online communities.
- Data-driven approach to inform decision making.
- Able to effectively present and explain findings to engage and influence AMAKA stakeholders.
- An expert at obtaining market and customer insights to inform product strategy, proposition development and go-to-market activity.
- Experience in designing and executing market research.
- Strong skills in Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets and/or Google Analytics.
- Be excited to work with the only publisher that connects a community of women from Africa and across the diaspora.
- An interest in African culture and Pan-African community building
- Exceptional project management skills
- Highly process-oriented and very well-organised, with a strong ability to work under pressure, manage multiple projects and meet tight deadlines.
- A natural leader.
- First-class communication skills with a natural ability to work collaboratively within the team and with external contacts or talent.
- A flexible and positive attitude, especially when facing changing priorities and
- challenges.
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced startup environment.
Additional Details
- Start Date: September 19th
- Contract length: Permanent
- Full-time hours: 40 hours per week
- 21 Pays of PTO and 10 Days of Paid sick leave
