Research Assistant

The Research Assistant will work as part of a dynamic multidisciplinary team in AHRI focusing on HIV research. The incumbent’s main responsibility is to work with human cells and HIV in the BSL-2 and BSL-3. He/She will perform cellular and molecular biology and immunology experiments including; ddPCR, tissue culture, flow cytometry, ELISA, in vitro infections, and seahorse assay.
Note: From time to time he/she may be required to perform other related duties and tasks as authorised by the Line Manager. The position is based at our Durban Campus.
Overview of Duties
- Perform laboratory activities related to the project.
- Assist senior researcher with experiments, quality control and data verification.
- Undertake blood sample processing when necessary.
- Prepare reagents, maintain cell lines and monitor viral cultures.
- Perform human tissue culture and virus infectivity experiments.
- Perform ELISA, Luminex and flow cytometry experiments.
- Perform molecular biology experiments including nucleic acid extraction, PCR, sequencing and cloning.
- Perform bioenergetic assays.
- Perform general laboratory housekeeping and equipment maintenance.
- Participate in the institution’s academic activities including journal club, lab meetings, research update meetings and etc.
- Work overtime, including weekends, when required.
As part of AHRI’s COVID-19 mitigation protocols and to increase the safety of our staff, this position has been classified as a high-risk position and as such applicants will be required to submit proof of vaccination against COVID-19 when applying.
**Minimum Qualifications**
1. Honours or Masters’ degree in Molecular biology, microbiology, biochemistry, virology, immunology or equivalent in related field
**Minimum Experience**
1. Processing and storing of human samples e.g. bloods, tissue, cells, RNA/DNA etc
2. Minimum 1 to 2 years’ experience in HIV laboratory research
3. Good Clinical Laboratory Practice
4. BSL2 and BSL3 laboratory experience advantageous
5. Experience in cellular and molecular biology, Immunology or Biochemistry techniques including PCR, sequencing, sequence analysis, and flow cytometry
6. High level of computer literacy
