**_ Position Purpose:_**

To lead all environmental management systems, processes and initiatives and direct activities for the entrenchment of

environmental management practices and regulatory compliance through the analysis and treatment of environmental

risk attached to any process, asset, or activity that may result in environmental degradation or impact negatively on the

bio-diversity, the organizations reputation and sustainable utilization of the environment in a manner that fulfils the mission

and strategic goals of the organization.

**_ Position outputs:_**
- Provide quantitative and qualitative strategic environmental risk assessments of all processes through leading and

facilitating the required course of action. Key indicators: Strategic Environmental Assessments (SEAs) risk register

(with elevation to national risk register) environmental risk treatment plans.
- Lead the implementation of environmental strategies, policies and systems to ensure corporate sustainable development.

Key indicators: Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Develop and maintain ISO 14000 certification through implementation of initiatives, appropriate for demonstrating

continuous improvement, international best practice and management commitment. Key indicators: ISO 14000

accreditation, surveillance audit reports, action plans, environment policy, ISO 14001 procedures.
- Achieve optimal waste prevention and minimization by coordinating deployed resources available for waste

prevention initiatives and review each waste steam against waste management policies and strategy.

Key indicators: resource management programme, waste management plans or strategy, environmental management plans,

associated reports
- Interpret legislation, guidelines and resolutions and develop / translate statutory requirements into procedures

in a manner that is understood by personnel at all levels of the organisation to entrench environmental awareness.

Key indicators: Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s), Work Instructions, Environment legal register, environment

management plans.
- Provide justification of preventive measures by cost benefit analysis following investigation into incidents and root

cause analyses and initiating / monitoring corrective action. Key indicators: Root Cause Analysis reports, Action plans for

improvement.
- Research and develop environmental protection initiatives to comply and in line with international best practice

and Transnet strategies and goals, organizational policy and strategic objectives. Key indicators: environmental

management campaigns, management reports, environmental initiatives.
- Practical evaluation of environmental treatment processes and alternatives. Key indicators: Enterprise Wide Risk

Management (ERM) risk assessments, risk treatment plans, environmental management reports, action plans, statistics,

environmental monitoring.
- Develop and implement education & awareness training programmes for a diverse range of personnel &
stakeholders (engineers / technologists / trade-hands / management) at all levels of the organization) to

increase awareness of emerging environmental problems and concerns, and to entrench consideration of these

in day to day activities. Key indicators: supplier code of conduct, training presentations, environmental management

framework, environmental training matrix
- Ensure compliance to developed policies by initiating and leading environmental regulatory activities and

planned (or adhoc) liaison with interested and or affected parties (stakeholders / service providers / regulators /

environmental pressure groups / NGO’s) and manage conflictresolution.

Key indicators: water and air quality reports, Audit Action Requests, Non Conformance Reports, forum minutes.

Management:

- Manage the performance of direct reports in order to provide improved quality service and to maximise job satisfaction.
- Ensure that performance scorecards and measures are formulated and agreed upon, on-going performance management
