Professor / Associate Professor and Executive Head

Duties/Pligte Reporting to the Dean of the Faculty and the Chief Executive Officer Tygerberg Hospital respectively, the incumbent's duties will include:
- Overall strategic leadership and operational management of the Department, giving expression to its vision of becoming a world-class centre for training, teaching and learning, clinical service, research and innovation in Paediatrics and Child Health;
- Fostering an inclusive and collegial environment that encourages a high level of performance, communication and teamwork;
- Operational management of human resources and finances of the Department;
- Clinical governance and participating in clinical service delivery commitments of the Department, including commuted overtime at Tygerberg Hospital in clinical service supervision and clinical leadership;
- Overall responsibility for teaching and learning, which includes leading and guiding curriculum development and assessments;
- Overall responsibility for guiding, mentoring and supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students across the Faculty's distributed training platform;
- Overall responsibility for research and innovation, which includes supervision of postgraduate students at least on Master's level, mentoring and participating in the design, execution, supervision, publication and translation of research in priority areas;
- Act as external examiner and moderator of undergraduate and postgraduate examinations, theses and dissertations;
- Collaborating and participating in scientific and professional organisations and interdepartmental activities through innovative networking;
- Contributing to the goals and functioning of the University and Western Cape Department of Health and Wellness, as well as National Department of Health through active involvement in the relevant management structures, committees and strategic initiatives;
- Expanding and strengthening collaboration with health services, communities and other stakeholders;
- Active participation in the internationalisation efforts of the University/Faculty.
Job Requirements/Pos Vereistes
- A postgraduate qualification which should include a MMed degree or College qualification or equivalent in Paediatrics;
- A PhD in Paediatrics or a related relevant area;
- Registration with the South African Health Professions Council as specialist in Paediatrics;
- Proven management and leadership experience in an academic environment;
- Proven management and leadership experience in a clinical environment;
- Proven national and international academic and specialist stature and recognition;
- Experience and proven expertise in curriculum development, planning and implementation in the health sciences;
- Proven ability to provide quality teaching and assessment and to promote independent learning for students using innovative and creative methods at undergraduate and postgraduate level;
- A track record of proven independent research and guidance of research with publications and related research outputs commensurate with the expected outputs at a professoriate level, including a record of successful research grants secured;
- Proven record of specialist participation in seminars, invitations as guest lecturer indicating academic standing;
- Ability to organise, take initiative and act as leader at departmental level.

- NRF rating;
- A fellowship qualification in a sub-specialty area in Paediatrics.
