**Senior Environmental and Climate Technical Specialist**
**Purpose of the Role**:
The Senior Environmental and Climate Technical Specialist will lead the technical delivery of key components of the ReLISA project, integrating scientific, policy, and data-driven approaches to support greenhouse gas (GHG) monitoring, landscape restoration, economic valuation, and capacity development. This expert will serve as the linchpin connecting field science, data systems, economic modeling, and policy frameworks to develop robust, internationally aligned MRV methodologies and decision-support tools.
**Core Responsibilities**:1. **GHG Accounting & MRV Leadership**
- Guide quantification of GHG emissions reductions from land-use interventions.
- Review, validate, and optimize carbon baselines and monitoring plans for restoration projects.
2. **Landscape Restoration Science & Field Oversight**
- Oversee ecological assessments, field data protocols, and environmental baselines related to land degradation and restoration outcomes.
- Provide scientific advice on ecosystem services, biodiversity monitoring, and land productivity assessment.
- Integrate remote sensing with ground-truthing to assess ecological recovery.
3. **GIS & Remote Sensing Integration**
- Guide the use of spatial data for mapping land use changes, emissions hotspots, and project impact areas.
- Review satellite image classification models, LULC changes, NDVI analysis, and geospatial dashboards.
- Support remote sensing-based impact assessments of nature-based solutions and restoration initiatives.
4. **Environmental Economics & Carbon Valuation**
- Lead development of economic models to assess cost-benefit scenarios of restoration and mitigation.
- Analyse ecosystem service valuation, carbon pricing strategies, and opportunity costs across sectors.
- Provide input into market readiness of carbon offset projects under frameworks like VCS, Gold Standard, and ICVCM.
5. **Climate Policy Advisory & Capacity Development**
- Align technical recommendations with South Africa’s national climate change policy frameworks and NDCs.
- Design and lead training workshops and knowledge exchanges for stakeholders at national and subnational levels.
- Develop technical guidance documents, policy briefs, and training manuals on MRV, restoration, and carbon markets.
**Required Qualifications and Experience:Education**:
- Master’s Degree (minimum) or PhD (preferred) in Environmental Science, Climate Change, Natural Resource Economics, Ecology, or related field.
**Professional Experience**:
- Minimum 10 years of progressive experience in climate change mitigation and adaptation projects.
- Proven track record in GHG accounting, MRV design, and carbon project methodologies (e.g., REDD+, ARR, ALM).
- Experience in economic and environmental modeling, policy formulation, and international climate negotiations.
- Strong background in multi-stakeholder project implementation, including donor-funded initiatives (e.g., GCF, UNDP, GEF).
