Reports To: Senior Management
Position Overview
The Training Manager will lead and manage the development and implementation of
comprehensive training programs across all disciplines of the transport and logistics
industry, with a specific focus on trades relevant to the trucking sector. These trades
include heavy vehicle mechanics, diesel engine maintenance, auto electrical
systems, hydraulic systems, suspension and steering, brake systems, and
advanced driver training. The role will cover apprenticeship programs, trade
certifications, and advanced driver training, ensuring that the company meets its skills
requirements to maintain the highest operational standards. The Training Manager will
also oversee third-party training providers and will be tasked with building a robust
internal training team capable of supporting long-term workforce development. A key
objective of the position is to establish a succession plan, training local PNG talent to
eventually take over the role.
Key Responsibilities
Develop and Implement Training Programs: Design and manage training
programs tailored to the trucking and logistics industry, covering key trades such
as:
- Heavy Vehicle Mechanics: Training on the maintenance, repair, and
diagnostics of heavy trucks and equipment.
- Diesel Engine Maintenance: Special focus on diesel engine operations,
troubleshooting, and repairs.
- Auto Electrical Systems: Training on vehicle electrical systems, including
wiring, diagnostics, and battery maintenance.
- Hydraulic Systems: Training on hydraulics used in heavy vehicles,
focusing on maintenance and repair.
- Suspension and Steering Systems: In-depth training on the repair and
maintenance of suspension and steering components.
- Brake Systems: Comprehensive training on air brakes and other braking
systems used in heavy vehicles.
- Advanced Driver Training: Ensuring drivers are trained to operate
vehicles efficiently and safely, with a focus on heavy truck driving
techniques, defensive driving, and compliance with safety standards.
Training Strategy: Collaborate with management to assess the company’s skill
gaps and forecast training needs. Develop a long-term training strategy aligned
with business objectives.
Management of Apprenticeships and Trade Training: Establish and manage
apprenticeship programs for new hires, particularly in technical and trade roles,
ensuring they receive high-quality, certified training in the relevant trucking
industry trades.
Coordination with Third-Party Providers: Identify, select, and manage
relationships with external training providers, ensuring that all outsourced training
meets company and industry standards, particularly in specialized areas such as
hydraulic systems, electrical diagnostics, and advanced driver training.
Departmental Development: Establish and lead a dedicated internal training
department. Hire and develop training staff, ensuring they are capable of
delivering high-quality training sessions across all relevant trucking industry
trades.
Training of Trainers: Implement a structured “train the trainer” program to
ensure that internal trainers are fully competent in delivering specialized training
programs.
Succession Planning: Prepare and mentor local PNG nationals to eventually
take over the role of Training Manager, ensuring knowledge transfer and local
capacity building.
Compliance and Reporting: Ensure all training programs comply with relevant
local and international industry regulations. Monitor, evaluate, and report on the
effectiveness of training programs and adjust strategies as necessary.
Budget Management: Develop and manage the training department’s budget,
ensuring efficient allocation of resources.
Qualifications and Experience
Educational Background: degree in Education, HR, or a technical field related
to the transport or logistics industry.
Experience: Minimum 7-10 years of experience in training management roles,
preferably within the transport, logistics, or trucking industry. Proven track record
of successfully managing large-scale training programs and working with third
- party providers.
Certifications: Relevant certifications in transport or logistics training, heavy
vehicle maintenance, auto electrical systems, or driver safety programs are
highly desirable.
Leadership: Strong leadership, management, and organizational skills with
experience in building teams and mentoring staff.
Cultural Awareness: Experience working in a multi-cultural environment, with
the ability to foster teamwork and cultural sensitivity.
Contract and Vendor Management: Strong experience in managing external
training partners and service providers.
