Capability Managers are responsible for the generation of knowledge and systems to assess and report on biodiversity and ecosystems in the Western Cape, and to enable the implementation of Strategic Adaptive Management Models through the development of plans, systems, and strategies for the conservation of biodiversity in the Western Cape. Capability Managers lead teams that include capability specialists, ecologists, technical and support staff and facilitates strategic direction, implementation, and reporting. Capability Managers are responsible and accountable for strategic, functional, human resource, financial and assets management functions and will report to the Executive Director: Biodiversity Capabilities.

The Capability Manager**:Biodiversity Intelligence** leads and guides the development and implementation of surveillance, monitoring and research strategies to inform, develop and report on the state of biodiversity, spatial biodiversity priorities, land use planning informants, protected area expansion and the implementation and legislative tools for the conservation of biodiversity in the Western Cape.

**RESPONSIBILITIES**:

- Manage and enable the development and integration of knowledge, planning and monitoring systems to advance the practice of biodiversity conservation and integrated catchment management.
- Manage the plan of work to publish five-yearly Western Cape Biodiversity Spatial Plans, Western Cape Protected Areas Expansion Strategies, Western Cape State of Biodiversity Reports
- Manage the plan of work to publish annual Western Cape State of Conservation Reports.
- Report on the implementation of South African Biodiversity Management Plans and the recommendations of the National Biodiversity Assessments.
- Manage scientific and technical contributions for the development and implementation of management plans, strategies, and frameworks for biodiversity conservation outcomes.
- Manage, develop, and integrate effective conservation and legislative policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Lead, contribute to and collaborate on the review and development of national and provincial biodiversity conservation legislation,biodiversity conservation policies and practices aligned with national legislation, policies, guidelines, and multilateral environmental agreements.
- Lead and contribute to evidence-based assessments to inform sustainable access, conservation management actions and the use of biodiversity.
- Generate impact through the enablement, development and integration of technologies, practice, policy, science, and innovation.
- Manage the research, development, and implementation of strategic adaptive management models for biodiversity.
- Manage and lead a team of scientific and technical specialists to produce scientific and technical publications, presentations, and reports.
- Manage and report on biodiversity conservation mainstreaming products and the uptake of mainstreaming interventions developed for specific stakeholder groups.
- Engage, collaborate, and direct engagement with strategic partners for advancing, securing, and enabling the development and deployment of biodiversity conservation capabilities.
- Manage and represent CapeNature’s mandate and interests on appropriate National and Provincial Forums.
- Manage and guide the prioritization of strategic partnerships.
- Manage, guide, and facilitate the development of appropriate external funding proposals.
- Manage the development, deployment, and integration of Biodiversity Intelligence into Conservation Operations.
- Plan and implement development and training of Biodiversity Capabilities in CapeNature.
- Manage and implement the development of biodiversity capability, capacity and the integration of innovation and technology.
- Direct and promote stakeholder capacity building and awareness about healthy natural ecosystems, habitats and landscapes and ecosystem services.
- Develop awareness materials about healthy natural ecosystems, habitats and landscapes, and ecosystem services.
- Manage financial and human resources efficiently, effectively, economically and in accordance with CapeNature’s, national and provincial policies, the principles of fairness and equity, and fair labour practices.

**MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS**:
**Qualifications and Experience**
- A post graduate qualification (NQF 8 or higher) in Natural/Biological Sciences.
- A minimum of 5 years’ middle management experience in the biodiversity/conservation sector. Senior management experience in the formal conservation sector will be advantageous.
