The Foundation for Professional Development’s Research Unit is based in Buffalo City Metro
(East London) in the Eastern Cape. The Research Unit aims to drive innovation in healthcare
and to inform public health programming and policy design through rigorous quantitative and
The Unit has a diverse portfolio of projects in the fields of HIV prevention, sexually transmitted
infections, and mental health.
The position provides a unique opportunity to build a career in clinical research, especially in
the fields of bacterial sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and HIV prevention. This includes
involvement in clinical trials, studies of the epidemiology of STIs, molecular diagnostics,
antimicrobial resistance, and novel public health strategies and interventions.

**Main responsibilities:
- To work closely with the Project Managers and support implementation of the STI research projects
on daily basis through weekly team meetings and advisory/supportive role.

- To provide clinical support and mentoring on genital and sexual health medicine issues, including the
infectious diseases, urology, gynaecology, and dermatology aspects of the projects.***
- To manage study participants at the Ndevana Community Research site in HIV prevention trials.***
- To lead a clinical capacity building programme for research staff in the field of STIs through trainings
and case discussions.***
- To work closely with data team to establish and analyse STI research databases. Support all aspects
of clinical data analysis and dissemination to stakeholders and collaborators.***
- To work closely with the project collaborators in South Africa (University of Cape Town; University of
Pretoria) and the various international project partners to generate scientific ideas, concepts, and
outputs.***
- To write scientific manuscripts of clinical research data collected in the various STI databases, and
through rigorous literature review (opinion pieces; reviews).***
- To support preparations, recruit and manage participants in an upcoming vaccine trial.***
- To contribute to (inter)national technical working groups and other appropriate stakeholder and policy
development platforms.***
**Essential Qualification and Registration**:
- MBChB
- Diploma in HIV Management
- Active registration with HPCSA as medical practitioner.
**Advantageous qualifications**:
- MSc in Public Health, Epidemiology, or related degree.
- Certificate of Good Clinical Practice.
**Job related experience**:
- Strong knowledge of the WHO Global Health Sector STI strategy and the South African guidelines
for management of STIs.
- Research experience (advantageous).
- Minimum of two years’ working experience as medical practitioner in the public health sector.
- Experience in clinical research and/or clinical trials (advantageous).
**Additional requirements**:
- Valid code 08 driver’s license.
- Willingness to travel.
- Proficiency in reading, speaking, and writing English.
- Proficiency in Xhosa and other local languages will be advantageous.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
