**Purpose of the Role**

We are seeking an experienced **Data Governance Specialist** to lead the implementation and operationalization of **data governance** and **metadata management** initiatives, with a strong focus on **Microsoft Purview**. You will work closely with business, data, and compliance teams to ensure data assets are discoverable, classified, governed, and used in compliance with organizational and regulatory standards.

**Key Responsibilities**
- Develop, implement, and maintain an **enterprise-wide data governance framework** aligned with business goals and compliance requirements (e.g., **POPIA**, **GDPR**, **King IV**).
- Lead the deployment, configuration, and operational use of **Microsoft Purview** for:

- **Data discovery & cataloging**:

- **Data classification**:

- **Lineage tracking**:

- **Business glossary development**:

- **Role-based access control**:

- Define and enforce **data governance policies**, standards, and data stewardship processes.
- Facilitate the creation and maintenance of **metadata repositories** and ensure alignment with data architecture and analytics teams.
- Collaborate with data owners, stewards, and IT to establish **data quality**, **data stewardship**, and **data lineage** practices.
- Conduct data governance awareness and training across the organization.
- Monitor regulatory trends and ensure governance practices are up to date with legal requirements.
- Support **data risk assessments**, audits, and compliance initiatives.

**Key Skills & Experience**
- 4-7+ years’ experience in **data governance**, **data management**, or **compliance** roles.
- Hands-on experience with **Microsoft Purview** or similar metadata management and data cataloging tools (e.g., Collibra, Informatica, Alation).
- Proven understanding of **data governance frameworks** (e.g., DAMA-DMBOK, DCAM).
- Knowledge of data privacy and protection laws relevant to South Africa and international markets (e.g., **POPIA**, **GDPR**).
- Experience with metadata strategy, taxonomy development, and glossary management.
- Strong knowledge of **Azure data ecosystem** (e.g., Data Lake, Synapse, ADF) is an advantage.
- Familiarity with **Master Data Management (MDM)**, **data quality tools**, and **lineage visualization**.
- Excellent stakeholder engagement, facilitation, and communication skills.

**Qualifications**
- Bachelor’s degree in **Information Systems**, **Computer Science**, **Data Management**, **Business**, or related field.
- Certifications in data governance or data management (e.g., **CDMP**, **DGSP**, **Microsoft Purview training**) preferred.
- Experience working in **regulated industries** such as finance, telecom, or healthcare is advantageous
