Senior Specialist: Investment Compliance Support

**Job Advert Summary**:
The Senior Specialist: Investment Compliance Support Services is first and foremost the support to the Senior Manager: Investment Compliance Support Services, thus bringing regulatory and technical skillset and leadership qualites to the Investment Compliance Support Services (“ICSS”) team.

The role largely entails the interpretation of both mandates and legislation/regulation in order to effectively translate the regulation into a workable compliance rule for monitoring. The role will work closely with the ICSS team to ensure that the interpretation is successfully applied to both the NX Manager platform (enabling pre
- and post-trade compliance) as well as the Compliance Reporting Warehouse. Whilst the primary focus of the role is thus the interpretation of mandates / regulation / legislation, there is also a requirement to have a working knowledge and understanding of the process of converting the regulation into rules within the technology platform. Therefore strong technical and operational knowledge of investment instruments is **essential**, and experience on NX Manager (Decalog) (preferred) or another comparable compliance monitoring system is ideal.

**Minimum Requirements**:

- An accounting or business degree (minimum B.Com or equivalent) together with at least 5 years fund administration/management experience in a compliance related role;
- Certificate in Compliance Management

**Duties and Responsibilities**:

- Compliance rule and monthly regulatory report testing, and running reports for distribution where necessary;
- Testing existing rules with a view to improving rule behaviour;
- Following of proper test protocol in UAT environment, and change control protocol of rules into the production environment;
- Being pro-active in solution-finding and regularly question processes and “status quo’s” to constantly improve;
- Co-ordinate the set-up of the Maitland Compliance User Group where consensus is required across our client base on interpretation issues;
- Providing support to the Maitland client base in respect of compliance related queries, including interpretation, investigation of breaches, reporting, etc.;
- Build excellent rapport with clients in developing their confidence in our service offering, and maintaining such well managed relationships to achieve the best results for the clients;
- Supporting the business development effort in expanding the Investment Compliance Support Services function;
- Bring your experience to provide daily oversight and assist to draft and monitor effective governance processes within the team to ensure high integrity of service provided;
- Daily monitoring of governance and integrity exception reports and addressing issues with the relevant teams;

- Support the Senior Manager: Investment Compliance Support Services in managing the day to day operations of the Compliance Services Support team, including the preparation and implementation of SLAs with clients, and the onboarding of new clients or portfolios.
- Lead the efforts within the ICSS team in respect of legislative, regulatory and mandate compliance requirements, and problem-solving;
- Monitoring for pending regulatory changes and appropriate planning for these changes, including client communications;
- Documenting the interpretation of legislative or regulatory changes, in a manner which allows for these documents to be circulated internally at Maitland or externally to clients, and on which compliance rules will be drafted. Confident interpretation skills of new regulation is sought.

**Skills and Competencies**:

- Strong numerical, analytical and investigative skills to review fund compliance reports in detail and respond to queries;
- Strongy Excel and spreadsheeting capability is essential;
- Strong knowledge of the full investment process: starting from the portfolio manager investment decision and trading process through to operational processes and client reporting;
- Well rounded understanding of the broad range of investment instruments and issuer types in order to be able to determine classification for regulation and ensure correct reflection in compliance rules and reports.
- Strong knowledge and understanding of the regulatory investment limits dominant in the Republic of South Africa such as Regulation 28, CISCA and Regulation 30, and UCITS;
- Attention to detail and structured work approach;
- Excellent communication and negotiation skills, both written and verbal, as the ICSS team is dependent on downstream operational team input. The role requires confident interaction with all areas of the business in order to achieve team tasks;
- Confident, enthusiastic and able to work under pressure;
- Be self-motivated to learn the systems and processes;
