Our client in the Durban North Area is looking for a Foundry Metallurist.

Main Purpose of this role: To ensure the quality and integrity of metal products and processes.

Minimum Requirements:

- A national diploma in Metallurgy.
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in a Foundry environment.
- Minimum 2 years’ experience working with induction furnaces.
- Data analysis and plant control experience is essential
- Proficiency in Excel
- A thorough understanding of foundry environment

Key Areas of Responsibility:

- Approval and acceptance of raw materials for use in melting furnace refractory lining.
- Approval and acceptance of raw materials for use in metal production.
- Conformance to specified requirements of chemical analysis of all metal produced.
- Quality and temperature of liquid metal delivered to moulds for pouring.
- Testing and recoding of chemical and physical properties of metals produced as necessary.
- Issuing of test certificates to verify chemical and physical properties of metals produced when required.
- Maintenance of metallurgical record files.
- Control of workmanship quality when installing or repairing melting furnace refractory linings.
- Metallurgical control of heat treatment operation.
- Adherence to the quality management system as documented, approved and issued.
- Daily calibration of spectrometer and filing of the result.
- Sand quality control: incoming and in-process sand.
- Micro structure evaluation of SG/cast iron Investigation of casting/metallurgy related defects.
- Daily chemistry review of all products made from previous day and authorization thereof.
- Sample retention (what samples get stored, how and for how long).
- Daily review of heat treatment cycles and authorization thereof.
- Routine audit of melting practice and improvements thereof
- Inspection of incoming raw material Routine furnace lining inspection reports.
- Furnace reline reports.
- Raw material inventory management of alloys.
- Metal accounting.
- Providing technical advice about the suitability of metals for different purposes.
- Making recommendations and advising about product feasibility.
- Undertaking new product research.
- Ensuring adherence to manufacturing quality standards.
- Overseeing operational quality control processes.
- Carrying out laboratory-based analysis of samples.
- Using both destructive and non-destructive techniques to test composition.
- Investigating production problems.
