At the South African Maritime Safety Authority, we are seeking a highly skilled Vessel Compliance Specialist to join our team. In this exciting role, you will play a critical part in ensuring that vessels, seafarers, and maritime service providers adhere to applicable maritime legislation and conventions.

The purpose of this position is to give effect to the objectives of the South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Instruments. As a Vessel Compliance Specialist, you will be responsible for undertaking all Statutory Surveys, Audits, and Inspections in accordance with applicable legislation and other relevant regulations relating to marine pollution prevention and safety.

You will also be tasked with giving full and complete effect to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW), 1978 in accordance with the provisions of section A-I/8 of the STCW Code. This includes conducting training, assessment of competence, certification, including medical certification, endorsement, and revalidation activities, as well as applying appropriate domestic legislation.

In addition, you will participate in the drafting of regulations and amendments to existing legislation in accordance with the Quality Standards System of SAMSA. You will also undertake and report on casualty/incident investigations, making recommendations based on the outcome of the investigation.

To be successful in this role, you must have a Chief Engineer (Unlimited) STCW Certificate of Competency, STCW ancillary courses, and equivalent training. You should also have sailed in rank of Second Engineer with seagoing experience.
