Overview

The Divisional Academic Lead for Cardiothoracic Surgery will provide academic leadership and management to the division, ensuring excellence in teaching, research, and service. This is a critical role that requires a strong vision, strategic thinking, and excellent communication skills.

Job Summary

We are seeking an exceptional candidate with a proven track record in academic leadership, research, and teaching. The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and implementing academic strategies, managing staff, and promoting collaboration across departments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the academic discipline of cardiothoracic surgery across all training facilities.
  • Formulate an academic vision and design undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programs in line with the university's objectives.
  • Strengthen research in the division by identifying opportunities, collaborating with colleagues, and securing funding.
  • Provide tools and create an academic environment that fosters optimal teaching, learning, and research for all categories of staff and students.
  • Set teaching, training, and research goals in collaboration with other members of the academic and clinical service staff.
  • Benchmark academic outputs against national performance and identify areas for improvement.
  • Collaborate with clinical heads to enhance academic outputs and promote excellence.
  • Promote staff development and manage staff performance and assessment within the division.
  • Mentor academic and professional staff for promotion in the university.
  • Support divisions within the department and work with divisional heads to ensure sound financial and human resources management.
  • Encourage collaboration between divisions working across the teaching platforms.
  • Chair academic meetings in the division and participate in faculty board meetings.

Requirements

  • A medical qualification registerable with the relevant authorities.
  • A specialist in cardiothoracic surgery with at least 5 years' experience as a surgeon.
  • At least 5 years' experience at mid-management level with a proven track record in academic leadership.
  • Appropriate teaching and research experience, with a PhD being an advantage.
  • Demonstrated well-developed communication, organizational, problem-solving, leadership, and project management skills.
  • Ability to manage change in the division and adapt to new challenges.
  • Management experience, particularly in academic activities involving postgraduate and undergraduate students.
  • A minimum level of Adjunct or Associate Professor, although other cardiothoracic surgeons meeting the above criteria may also apply.

Salary and Benefits

The salary range for this position is R1,200,000 - R1,800,000 per annum, depending on qualifications and experience. In addition to the salary, the successful candidate will receive a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, retirement fund contributions, and paid leave.
