Role Summary The R&D and Prototype Manager will lead the development of new furniture concepts from ideation through prototyping, ensuring technical feasibility, material suitability, and aesthetic integrity. This is a hands-on, cross-functional role that bridges design, engineering, materials sourcing, and manufacturing. Managing the prototype workshop and team, ensuring that designs meet commercial, quality, and brand standards while remaining manufacturable at scale. Key Responsibilities Own the prototyping process from initial drawings and models to final physical samples. Interpret design intent and provide technical input to optimise form, function, and manufacturability. Lead hands‑on fabrication, mock‑ups, and material exploration with in‑house craftsmen or external partners. Ensure accurate communication of design specifications (fabrics, tolerances, construction, etc.) to technical and production teams. Source and trial new materials, finishes, and construction techniques aligned with the brand's aesthetic and sustainability goals. Monitor global design, material, and technology trends, and translate relevant innovations into future collections. Collaborate with suppliers, artisans, and R&D labs to experiment with materials and finishes such as upholstery detailing. Generate detailed CAD drawings, prototype specs, and BOMs in collaboration with design engineers. Conduct risk and feasibility analysis for each new design before moving into production. Maintain a digital and physical library of tested components, materials, and past prototypes. Manage a small team of skilled prototype CAD designers, frame makers, upholsterers and seamstresses. Plan workflow and priorities in the prototyping area to meet launch deadlines. Ensure safety, cleanliness, and effective tooling within the workshop environment. Work closely with Product Design, Production, Sourcing, and Marketing to ensure the prototype aligns with cost, brand, and lead time expectations. Participate in design reviews, providing feedback on technical constraints and innovation opportunities. Support the transition from prototype to production, including pilot runs, process development, and training. Skills & Qualifications Degree or diploma in Furniture Design, Industrial Design, Product Engineering, or related field. 7+ years of experience in furniture prototyping, R&D, or technical development, preferably in a high-end or design-led environment. Strong understanding of traditional and modern furniture construction techniques and sewing techniques. Proficiency in CAD software (e.g., Inventor, SolidWorks, Rhino, AutoCAD) and Microsoft Office. Familiarity with production processes is highly valued. Knowledge of sustainability and circular design principles is a plus. Strong problem-solving, organizational, and communication skills. Passion for craftsmanship, innovation, and storytelling through design. #J-18808-Ljbffr
